Which wiper motor
« on: 04 November 2015, 17:31 »
So after the recent fire, I'm trying to get a new wiper motor. My question is which wiper motor do I get. I got a new one in the post today after entering my vehicle details online at a well know site, to receive a confirmation email saying the part fits, to find that it doesn't! After looking at a few other sites I think I'm going to have the same problem. My olde knackered wiper motor has a large spline for the wiper mech to bolt on to, whereas the new one, and others I've looked at have a small spline! Is the olde wiper mech, motor possibly from a later mk3 golf? or an early mk2/1 golf? Anyone in the know?

Well as I was getting no where with this topic, today I pulled the 2 motors apart.
Old and new splines together...

I simply swapped them over :-)

Slight bit of modding, the old spline stood slightly proud in the new housing as there is a plastic 'nipple' on the underside of the cog the spline sits in. I file'd it down till it was almost flush with the underside of the cog, and hey presto, it fits! 1 job done, too many jobs to list left to do!

them splines look the same to me but the thread on the end looks smaller(new one). could you not have put a smaller nut with a washer on it?

In a word, no! It's not the nut its the mechanism that bolts on to the motor spline! Its hard to see (shud have took pics but its all back in the car now) but if you look at the splines where the mech goes on to, the old one (thicker spline) has a gradual groove where the mech sits on, where as the new one (thin spline)  has a more immediate groove with a lip on. (Hope this is making sense) The hole on the mech, what slips over the spline is ever so slightly larger (on my old pre '87 golf), so when put on the new motor (thin spline) it doesn't 'bite'. Ya get me ;-)!!
