Water pump & hot oil smell
« on: 02 November 2015, 07:12 »
Hi Guys,
just had a new waterpump fitted on my 14 plate GTi after a loss of coolant and a few times hot oil smell. This was done a couple of weeks ago but I can still smell the hot oil when I get out of the car. Is this a common 'fault' with the GTi? I 've had the car for over a year but this only started at the back end of the summer.
Any info would be helpful
Thanks
Rob

Have you asked the garage to check for oil leaks, particularly over the exhaust manifold area?

I haven't no but they said there was evidence of coolant on the sump, I am guessing they would have had a good look around whist they had the car? (maybe!)

Are you sure the smell is hot oil?

The smell of coolant burning of has a pungent smell (different to burning oil) and can take ages to go. If they never hosed it all off the engine after the job then it's likely it's that causing the smell

It's like a hot burning rubber smell, like something overheating.

You could whip the engine cover off and have a nose around for oil leaks. Check around rocker cover and check the engine tray too.

Hi sorry for the delay in responding, it does smell like hot oil to me. Like in the old days when the cars I had always burnt oil...!! I'll have a look and if it persists I will get them to have another look.
Really appreciate the time you have spent trying to help
