It's not just about octane, have these cheaper supermarket fuels got the effective detergents/lubricants to keep the fuel system and intake valves, head etc clean?  I was scared away from using them a few years ago because of this issue but it may be a different story now.

I've used supermarket fuel for years and years and never had a single issue. I've had a job which has taken me past a tesco station that sells momentum so I've been running that but I will have to go back to standard 95 soon as no one sells super around here. Well I can get it but it's well out of my way to get it.

It was a consideration that helped sway me to the GTI rather than the R or Leon Cupra as they are are listed as requiring super.
