Interesting comparison with the Merc. We had the previous shape A-Class (W169) in the family for a few years and I remember it been quite a likeable car with all the qualities you'd expect from a small German hatch, but obviously the new model is very different. It seems they've now gone for the mass market as it's pitched squarely at the 1-series. You have to remember though that for Mercedes their main speciality is executive saloons and they haven't long been in the hatchback game. VW Group on the other hand are the experts in hatchbacks so do a properly good job of it.

I can relate to all the comments about the Golf having that special 'coming home' feeling, which is why I keep buying them! The Mk7 is a truly accomplished and talented all rounder. Some rivals may beat it in certain areas but as an overall package nothing touches it. Watch this video from 52 minutes in if you need a reminder why - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x24iep4_james-may-s-cars-of-the-people-episode-3_auto

I've just had to briefly pause my Golf love following my first ever close encounter with an A45 AMG.
That exhaust note! Wow!
Yes, I'm easily pleased.

That's all very well if you don't mind driving it wrapped in a brown paper bag (the car not you), to hide the Astra-esque sides.

IT is a bit of a curious design of car.
It looks like the front designer, side designer and rear designer of the A class all worked in different studios and didn't get on too well.

That's the best, and most accurate, description of the A45's looks I've heard. :afro:

I would take it one step further and say, not only did they not get on well, they never met, nor caught glimpse of each other's work.
