Newbie help please
« on: 28 October 2015, 23:07 »
Hi all,
I have just bought a mk4 1.8t gti that's nice cond just a couple of niggles. Firstly under acceleration it hesitates and kind of splutters a bit and seems to go away at approx 4k revs, on idle it's perfect and starts perfect. After a search on the net points towards a maf sensor?? Can this be cleaned? Or the throttle body? Any tips or links to guides would be greatly appreciated!
Secondly there is a kind of rattle from underneath when coasting that goes away when accelerating. Exhaust heatshield?

Thanks in advance guys

your probably best buying a cheap code reader to see if anything comes up before guessing

Code reader ordered. I have tried disconnecting the maf with engine running and the engine was exactly the same when on a test drive. Surely that would point towards a maf? I will wait till I read the codes.

I bet you got a split pipe , around the breather system ,once you found it , you can replace with oem or silcone

Coilpacks? Also yes, exhaust heat shield, mine was rattling for years before I finally changed to a stainless downpipe/cat which does away with the heatshield.

Just took the engine covers off and your right a hose has a split in and like sponge and some clown has taped it up! Gggrrrr another one ordered from tps and off to collect it a minute. Report back later hopefully to say it's all awesome!

The split hose swapped but unfortunately when removing the old one the plastic pipe it connects to was brittle and split too! I fitted it the best I could and taped it on till I can get back to tps to get that one too. A test drive was slightly better than before but still spluttering a little. Hopefully it's just because I taped it?? It is well taped up tho. I hope I haven't bought a lemon :-((
