Awesome ECU video - piggyback tuning box traps
« on: 23 October 2015, 08:37 »
Just watched this video which is a great watch. What I did notice is 2/3 of the way through he mentions manufacturers are starting to place traps on the ECU sensors to trap piggyback tuning boxes. Anyone heard about these?

That was a very good, simple, description of tuning.

I learnt a lot there!

As for "implausable" data... don't we see those sorts of messages already?

It has long been recommended that if you remove a tuning box before taking the car in car warranty work you should also run a VCDS scan and erase any error codes that have been recorded, to be sure there are no traces left (implausible data messages).

I'm surprised that the car's system allows you to remove log entries... you'd think that the vendor would prevent log data tampering...

You can erase error codes with vcds but they are logged somewhere else in the ECU apparently if you know where to look.

I bet most VW dealership techs don't know where to look!  They couldn't find that EPC fault code that we hadn't erased.

Would be interesting to hear from a VW Master Tech if this is really true or just a VW rumor to worry people, if this was the case surely Ross-Tech would issue a warning

I'd imagine there'll be a log of something, somewhere. Just depends how much time and effort the dealership or VW want to put in.
