I think these cars have some real character, unusual in a modern car and definitely become as much a hobby as a means of getting from a to b. The fact that they also get from a to b in an exciting way (if you so wish) is the sticky cake topping!

Agree, first time I have felt this since owning my MKIIs.

I still have my GTI PP (Oryx White) absolutely love it.  I still can't look at it enough without think what a great looking car it is.  It is also a great car to drive, still give it a spurt in sport mode now and again when my wife is not in the car, which brings a smile to face even now 2 years in to ownership.  It will be sad when I do trade it in eventually in the future.  Was thinking of an R but then i just look out the window and keep thinking should I do it just yet.  I am currently waiting to see what the GTI Clubsport and Golf R400 maybe like next year, but still have that feeling deep down that I should just hold on to the GTI PP as it is such a great car.

I am currently waiting to see what the clubsport is going to be like when orders open, but what might put me off is that the GTI is such a good all rounder. I can drive it down a motorway for 200 miles and feel completely fine when I get there and then drive the lanes like a sports car.
I think if I had gone for white or silver with performance pack I would have been tempted to keep it but was always thinking about a 40th edition as a keeper so tried something different with carbon grey which is a great colour.
On Order - Mk 8.5 Clubsport Pure White, Queenstown, DCC.
MK 7.5 R Pure White, Pretoria Silver, DCC, Rear Camera.
Gone - MK 7 GTI Carbon Grey, Rear Camera, Service Pack.
Gone - MK 6 GTI  Reflex Silver, Monza Shadows, RCD 510, Rear Camera, Bluetooth, Tyre Pressure Sensor, Xenons Convenience pack, Service Pack :)
Gone - MK 5 GTI Reflex Silver, Monza II 18's, Luxury Pack, Mulitchanger

6 months in and enjoying my GTI PP, only annoyance are the rattles which are getting worse from the dash and a-pillars. Started off just occasionally over very rough surfaces but now pretty much all the time. 4 dealer visits and still not fixed. Luckily the Wolf Alice album is so good its being constantly played to drown them out.

What is there not to like about the GTI, cleaner than the GTD and better looking than the R.

Put the touch paper away.

Love the R, but lots of love for both the GTI (and GTD) too. As do many others on here I imagine.

Booth I've got a brand new set of Bosch aerotwins for sale! Would have been cheaper than ordering a set. Anyone else wanting aerotwins I've got a brand new set boxed for sale.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

So glad someone posted this question as I've been thinking the same thing for ages. 70% of the time this place feels like an R forum or a forum for people wrestling with the idea of switching to one. That's okay but if you're not one of them it can become tiresome. Having said that I do enjoy reading their stories (albeit a lot of them).

I've had my GTI 2 years now, done nearly 27,000 miles and it's been an absolute joy. Love driving it every time I get in and that's the sign of a really great car. It's so well screwed together and feels properly  engineered. I've not suffered any rattles or squeaks in the car apart from the annoying Soundaktor (now disconnected). Fuel economy isn't half bad - 38.5 mpg long term average and 42 mpg on longer motorway journeys (bare in mind mines a DSG). Which for a car this punchy is pretty impressive.

I feel the GTI is the sweet spot of the Golf performance range (GTD, GTE, R, etc). Fairly frugal, fast when you want, sedate at other times and has that iconic status (unless VW keep watering it down with too many derivatives).

Not going to mention any negatives about my GTI on this thread as its about 'Appreciation'. It's far too easy to be negative.

All being well I'll be keeping it another 2 years (totalling 4) then look to change. Mk8 GTI if it's any good

The fuel economy is as you say great considering what it is. The below is not from diving like a nun either.
