So glad someone posted this question as I've been thinking the same thing for ages. 70% of the time this place feels like an R forum or a forum for people wrestling with the idea of switching to one. That's okay but if you're not one of them it can become tiresome. Having said that I do enjoy reading their stories (albeit a lot of them).
I've had my GTI 2 years now, done nearly 27,000 miles and it's been an absolute joy. Love driving it every time I get in and that's the sign of a really great car. It's so well screwed together and feels properly engineered. I've not suffered any rattles or squeaks in the car apart from the annoying Soundaktor (now disconnected). Fuel economy isn't half bad - 38.5 mpg long term average and 42 mpg on longer motorway journeys (bare in mind mines a DSG). Which for a car this punchy is pretty impressive.
I feel the GTI is the sweet spot of the Golf performance range (GTD, GTE, R, etc). Fairly frugal, fast when you want, sedate at other times and has that iconic status (unless VW keep watering it down with too many derivatives).
Not going to mention any negatives about my GTI on this thread as its about 'Appreciation'. It's far too easy to be negative.
All being well I'll be keeping it another 2 years (totalling 4) then look to change. Mk8 GTI if it's any good
