You can't have fog lights without headlights on...

Proof.

As above, my fog lights work in auto as I use them to thank people when the headlights are on.

I don't ever drive with them unless it's foggy though, or i'm down a very dark lane!

you can code them via VCDS to come on when your full beam are on.
So when you flash someone they automatically come on.
Great feature for country roads.

Driving with fog lights on used to be a pet hate of mine until I watched Alpha Papa the movie and I realised I was turning into Alan Partridge - "your fog lights are on"

Sorry - I will correct my post - foglights can be selected in Auto (i don't think you could with the mk.6 though). Is the issue that people are leaving their setting on Auto all the time with the first click pulled out so fog lights are on all the time and the headlights come on and off with the light sensor?

Yes, I discovered you can pull it out when its set to auto engage the fog lights. I learnt something here :)

However, the bloody bright warning lights telling you that your fogs are on is a bit of a clue... basically the idiots don't care.

Not quite - if the light switch is in auto, and you pull it out to put the front fog lights on then the headlights come on as well, irrespective of how dark it is - the light sensor seems to be bypassed in this situation.

The switch is at the sidelight setting and pulled out to activate fog lights.
