Aftermarket wheels - who's got what?
« on: 10 October 2015, 14:17 »
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it has long been my signature to run a different set of alloy wheels on almost all of my cars.
I'd fully intended to run the R on standard wheels but old habits and all that...

The mk7 is a fussy shape as far as I'm concerned when it comes to matching it with alloy wheels. The factory has done quite a good job with its choice of wheels but some of us just like to be a little bit different.

With my GTI back in 2013 it didn't take long for me to put the 19's I'd had on both my mk6's on but somehow the BBS wheels didn't quite suit the shape of the mk7 as well as the mk6.

Excuse the poor iPhone photos, they lose the 3D features that make the BBS's look quite muscular in the flesh.

Collection day

A few weeks later

How they looked on the mk6

As the OEM wheels were about the only ones I'd seen that suited the more angular style of the mk7 I began to look for something with an OEM flavour and feel.
It didn't take me long to settle on a set of Rondell alloys (German made) and the BBS's were snapped up in the classifieds

And now to the R and I'm four months into ownership and am still on the standard 18" wheels and I'm stuck for ideas for replacement. I neither love nor dislike the Cadiz but I'd like to put a bit of a more personal signature on the car - so any suggestions?

Again, from pick up day

I think it would suit a set of Rotarys, but they only come in 18", or a similar lightweight motorsport type wheel in black.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Hi Exonian.

I think the BBS wheels suit the MK6 better as they are a bit of an older design with smoother curves and surfaces which match the design of the MK6 whereas the MK7 has a sharper, more angular look which is why the VW wheels and your Rondells work. So that is what I think you need to find, also as dubber has said, colour will be important but I'm not sure about black, but definitely a minimum of gloss.

Or that could be total bo***cks!

My money would go on a set of BBS XA

Really suits the shape of the MK7 and has a very OE look about them imo

Thanks for the input and suggestions

@dubber36, if they did Rotarys in 19" with a Scirocco offset then I'd be very interested but probably not at VW retail prices.

@Watts, your thinking was the same as mine!

@Beddie, The SRs and XAs were there at the top of my list. I think I'd sway more towards the SR as the XA looks a little too much like the Pretoria or an Audi wheel but I do really like them. They cost a bomb from UK suppliers and my usual German retail outlets only have the XA in really low offsets in stock which would fit a Scirocco maybe but not a Golf at the front.

@BigD, yep, SR's are a big draw for me, especially in 19" in grey like yours which I'd use as an all year round wheel (I do minimal mileage over winter and live on the South West coast so don't get much snow, if any)

The Revo 19s look good, the ones on their modified R. Look a bit like an update to your BBS.
