Thanks all for the helpful pics of pressed plates on dark/black cars.  I do really like pressed plates, and think that is the way I will go.  I was thinking of loosing the surround altogether for a really clean look, but not sure about the durability of stick on plates.  Anyone got any links for pressed plates?  Much appreciated.

I think the surrounds and metal plates look a bit naff on newer cars

I stick with the old and trusty plastic stock plate, i have gone non euro now and my local VW dealer were the cheapest for plates.

Mine never stuck the black strips on

Do you lads with the pressed plates just stick them on or are they in surrounds. I've had two vw Wolfsburg number plate surrounds in the garage for a couple of years, brand new. Would these be better to use than what the dealer will fit and no doubt screw straight into the bumper etc?

I've always stuck mine on, however if you ever need to remove them, you'll likely ruin the plates.

Or if you're the Cypriot guy who changed my plates for me when I exported the car there (I didn't ask him to, he thought he was doing me a favour) who ruined the paintwork behind the rear plate, damaged the OEM surround on the front as well as ruining both of the actual UK plastic number plates taking them off

I always use surrounds as they house the plates nicely. After a few years the paint starts to chip/fade so I just prize the plates out of the surrounds and pop in the new ones. 5 min job once you have taken the trouble to screw the surround onto the backing plate. My main reason for using metal plates is that I really hate the screws and plastic caps that come with standard plates.
