Problem with the throttle sensor ? Fuelling not right ? Problem with the ECU maybe ? Under inflated tyres ? Excess weight in the car ?

What model / engine is it ??

It all depends on what sort of driving you are doing

Town , lots of traffic ?

MPG is calculated on the distance you have gone against the fuel used. It will start off low and build up over time

thanks for the post's the golf is a mk3 2.0 8v gti 1998 with air con. the day before it was showing about 35 mpg driving steady .so overnight it has lost 10 mpg.

Mine was the same l spent months trying to sort it out and give up in the end, but funny enough its ok now after loads of motorway miles.l think its something to with the isv, because when slowing down l was braking against the engine and the idle was high some times, that seems to be ok now and l get 38mpg on a run now instead of 25.Also when l was using optimax it used loads and l found the same with my bike as well.
