Sat at the side of the road again
« on: 22 September 2015, 11:43 »
Not very amusing, I'm currently parked at the side of the road with good olde trusty which has suddernly decided to not start. Started fine this morning, been for a run over to Leeds and back. Just stopped n popped into a shop, gets back in olde trusty and nothing!! Put key in barrel, lights come on on dash, pump primes.... turn to start and nothing! (Pump continues to whirr) has something just failed, ie starter motor, solenoid? I don't want to hear ignition switch as it was only replaced around 2 month ago, and when that did fail the pump didnt even prime which is kind of throwing me away from that anyway! Any suggestion as I could be sat here for a few hours!!!

Good suggestion, but no!... sorry should have said in original post, as sad as it is I carry spare fuses and relays around in the car with me for such occasions and have already tried that. Im leaning back towards the ignition switch (steering column 1) as it went for its MOT last week and I remember the mechanic saying he had trouble starting it, he couldn't turn the key. I think he must have been too rough with it and must have f***d it. As I guess is common knowledge on here you have to give the steering wheel a little wiggle as you turn the key so it turns in the barrel. I'll try another new ignition switch and see where it goes from there. Meanwhile more suggestions welcome incase it isn't that!

My ignition switch failed a couple of months back. The job replacing it is such a ballache  I was determined not to have to do it again so I've put the soleniod feed through a relay

You actually checked the starter motor?

Do you get a click at all when starting it with the bonnet open. Mine did this the other day (no click) and the live the starter had simply come loose from the connector spade.

Worth having a look around.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Hit the nail on the head!!... The live wire had come away from the terminal on the starter. I didn't notice it when I had the bonnet up as it had just come away from the terminal and rested on the plastic. Good thinking batman!!!
