AUM loosing coolant, please help!
« on: 09 September 2015, 08:44 »
One of the collection of my Dubs is a 51 plate Golf GTI Turbo AUM. She has 168,000 miles and not much history, I bought her the other week off Autotrader.

Since I have had her I have done a full service but have noticed she is using around 1 litre of coolant every few days. I have checked hoses to the rad and they all seem fine as does the rad. Is there any known places for the AUM's to leak from? I have checked the coolant and there is no petrol looking coloured water in there and the dipstick and oil cap have no mayo on them so don't think it is the HG.....Well at least I hope not!

Any advice/help would be great

Flanges on head and radiator itself... rads have been to have hairlines or stone chips.

Not that I have noticed which made me worry that it could be the HG.

There is a sort of swan neck connector on the head above the gearbox.
Thermostat housing also likes to buckle and leak -that's hiding under the inlet manifold along with most of the rotten engine breather pipes. Bit of a pain to get to with the alternator in place.

Mines had 4 leaks from a small metal pipe that runs from the front of the engine around to the back (gear box side). There always pin hole size.
