New GTI Buyer - A Few Questions Please

I sympathise that you want to keep it, as I get attached to cars and keep them for a long time.  Why not use it as a run about to keep the mileage and short stop-start journeys down on the GTi?  VW Insurance allow you to have your NCD on both cars (most insurers don't) you could insure it for a limited annual mileage - don't think the cost would be too bad.  With my MK 4 it is a no-brainer as the £700 it costs to keep it on the road for a year is less than the depreciation to my new GTi fom the extra miles.

Sell the Mk6 and buy a Honda S2000/Elise or whatever for cheap, soft-top thrills... and keep that in the garage...

I've just paid a deposit on a new GTI ( carbon grey, performance pack, 5 door, manual ) and this will be a cash purchase as I also like to own my car.
I want a new 16 plate so the dealer has told me that he will just put the order in at the beginning of Dec.
I could barely hand over the keys of my 56 plate Audi A3 tdi 170 s line. I owned that car from new and had covered less than 37000 miles in it. I'd have kept it if I could.
It seems crazy getting sentimental over a car but when you've had it so long, it is a wrench to think of someone else driving it and probably abusing it!
I'm sure that when the Golf arrives I will quickly forget about it.

I know exactly what you mean. I'd had my last car (also an Audi) for 12 years from new and was dreading selling it. In the end, a friend from work had it and is looking after it rather well except for the alloys which I'd had refurbished and are now all badly kerbed My GTI has been fantastic and although I miss the Audi, I get to see it regularly but I'm very happy with my new car.

I put my order in a week or so ago for a GTI with a few options on and was told it was 14-16 weeks wait time.
If it's due for delivery in February I'll hold them off registering it until March but if it's earlier that that I won't be able to resist

My brother in law bought my last Golf, a 53 plate TDI, after I'd bought my Audi.
He really wanted my Audi but didn't have the funds, so it had to go.
It would have been nice to keep it in the family but it wasn't to be.
I might give my dealer a call and ask him to order my GTI a bit earlier if the build time is 14/16 weeks.
I still want the new 16 plate so if it arrives earlier they can hang onto it for a week or so.

Well my dealer has informed me that instead of ordering my new car in December in order for it to arrive in time for a new 16 plate, it has already been ordered!
He has told me it will take about 8 weeks meaning that I will have to decide whether to get them to put it in storage until March or take it earlier than I wanted.
I could have done without these difficult decisions at my age!
It's s good job I didn't want to change the spec of the car in the meantime.

You still can, as long as you haven't got a confirmed build date you can change anything.

Thanks for the link and info. I don't appear to have a usable order number yet. The order no on my new vehicle order sheet only has 7 numbers as opposed to the eight that it should be.
Am I missing something ?

Just ask them for the order number. That will be the number they use with VW to order your car.
The number you have is probably their own in-house number.
