You can use any 5w30 as long as it has VW's 504.00 / 507.00 approval (ignore the ones that say it matches them as they are not approved officially).

Afaik VW have now swapped from Castrol to Shell to supply their factories.

I was quoted £213 for the first 'oil change / minor service' from my VW local dealer and £158 from my local independent.
Thats the highest quote I have ever heard for a first service... I was quoted 189.00 from VW Harlow - they were not open to negotiation, same from St Albans (same dealer group) - so I took it to VW Romford for 149.00.

£149 appears to be the standard minor service cost for a 3+ YO car so wouldn't expect to pay much more than that - £200+  is taking the p

Yes the price does seem high. I thought things were meant to be cheaper up here in the North!

What I'm still not 100% sure of, and what I'm trying to clarify with the dealer, is whether the 'Oil Change' request is considered the 'First Service'.

Or is the first service is in fact due next year, with just an oil change required now.

Also thanks for comments about swapping to the Fixed Service Regime. Had a look at the VW page and my driving profile probably fits the Flexible pattern. Occasional 500 mile round trips. Low load. No cold starts. No stop/start traffic etc.

All I want to do is make sure I comply with the warranty and keep the car running smoothly. Oh and not be scammed by the Stealers :)
