Unwanted attention
« on: 21 August 2015, 16:20 »
Just wondering if I'm unlucky or if its a national pastime

Over the last few months I've noticed cars trying to bait me.
For instance:

2 Mk 5 Golfs slowing down in front of me on a dual carriageway then flooring it.

A Seat screaming up behind me on a 30mph road as if they are about to overtake but sitting that close to me I couldn't see their headlights (it was at 1am). We both then turned on to a dual carriageway, and he drew level beside me for a few hundred metres and then floored it.

I've also had a Cupra who I overtook on a dual carriageway (60mph) come chasing after me and then sat in front of me slowing down to just under the speed limit. Obviously hoping I'd try and overtake him again.

There has been a couple of other occasions that I can't quite remember. Although its not that many all in in the 14months I've owned the car its certainly a lot more than when I had any other type of car.

Is it a GTD thing, a GTI/D/R thing or have I just been unlucky?

I'm late 40's and don't wear a skip cap  so I don't think I've been looking for the attention. I can't recall getting any of that in my Mk6 but then again that was just a GT.

I get it all the time with my R (Lapiz Blue) cars hammering it to catch me then sit next to me waiting for me to gun it. I used to get it in my GTI as well, so I think it's the hot hatch range from VW.

Although the attention is different, people seemed to think they could take the GTI, where as the R, it seems like they know they are gonna lose but want to see how close it is.

I get it too. Had a total c*nt in a BMW 335d slowing down in front of me on a dual carriageway (to 60-70mph). Then every time I tried to overtake him he out accelerated me. I was as mad as hell!! That was the one time I wish I'd had more power so I could wipe the smile off his arrogant BMW face. Grrrrrrr

I am finding I get tailgated a lot more often in this than I was in my 2.0 TDI Match and people generally seem less courteous. Still a great car but its aggressive looks aren't always a good thing!

Major saddo lol...

The other thing to consider is some of these cars are now much more affordable, probably a few around for £4-5k bracket and less. So a younger and possibly chavvier crowd will be driving around in modified cars looking for a race to see how they stack up.

335D's have a lot of power especially when remapped but deliberately blocking someone who's trying to overtake is crap driving.

I used to get people trying to race me when I had an impreza, usually youngsters but it's nice when you get the occasional old boy trying.

Had an old Volvo V50 D2 (1.6 diesel) pull up next to me at a set of lights, revving the tits off it and staring over. I just laughed. He was obviously trying to instigate a drag race. I waved him on before setting away sensibly. You get all sorts.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I think your comment about colour can have a fair bit to do with unwanted attention.

With white cars for instance it does stand out as a 'look at me' colour and invite 'attention' imo for both valid admiring reasons but also from the idiot brigade.

I prefer stealth colours ..

I prefer to be stealth

No offence to those choosing white
