Front wheel bearing replacement on power steering models

I am just about to start this but the Haynes manual is telling me I have to remove the power steering unit first to avoid damaging it, is this absolutely necessary??!

From the book (chapter 10 section 17):

Tie-rods and balljoints (power steering) - removal and refitting
"Remove the steering gear unit, together with the tie-rods from the car. This is necessary to avoid damaging the rack and pinion."

No only the joints, ends and outer cvs to get the hub off.
hang the caliper with wire/ties from the strut/spring to avoid stressing the pipe.
bearings are pressed in and out can be a pita don't start hammering
mark the bottom bracket hub positions to get it back somewhere near.
you may wat to loosen the rack iirc.
need tracking afterwards

I thought not. I am replacing the wishbones, suspension struts and coils as well as renewing the balljoints so it will definitely need aligning afterwards.

Just easier with a bit of wiggle when its all going back together and its only few bolts to crack off.
Are you doing top mounts/bearings as well?
Go for Mk3 GTI mounts and bearings if you are lowering the car

I'm lowering it slightly on Eibachs, have looked at the G60 top mounts but mine seem in good condition. Already bought the wheel bearings, didn't know the MK3 ones would fit! Purchased some febi bearings from eBay but who knows if they are decent or not...
