Windscreen replacement tomorrow - Questions
« on: 19 August 2015, 21:53 »
Getting my windscreen replaced tomorrow is there anything I need to check for ?  Don't have lane assist (thanks sootchucker) but do have the standard rain & light sensors.  I have read about new gel packs to refit these on the new screen on older golf's is this the case with the MK7?  The new screen will not come from VW but should it come with the gel packs if required?  Not using autoglass but a decent independent.

Advise or help if possible pls

Thanks

Just had the screen replaced on mine by Autoglass... took about 30min.  Chatting with the fitter he reckoned it was nice and straightforward.  I was worried about bits of loose trim etc. afterwards but I really can't tell it's been done.

Not sure on the gel packs sorry, but he did start the car afterwards to make sure the sensors were still working correctly.
Tornado Red GTD ordered 25th April, confirmed BW34. Built sometime in BW36, now in the UK and delivered 27/09 :-)

Thanks I understand that it is straight forward & I will check the sensors etc.  Not using Autoglass as the last mobile fitter's english was pretty poor  + they can't do it for a week or so anyway

When I had one replaced on my Audi a couple of years ago, autoglass fitted a defective screen; so the replacement I insisted was OEM

Windscreen being done as we speak and there is a round gel pack between the sensor and the glass, despite VW saying there isn't

Hmmmm so so, didn't use Autoglass but a recommended independent the whole gel pack yes or no was a nightmare VW said not required but it was  so thankfully I prompted the fitter to bring a pad.  However he brought a pattern part which didn't seal properly on the screen   so in the end we used sensor tack but had to apply it thick to work which it did thankfully.  He was 3 hours late and the inside of the car was a mess as was the screen so I had to clean up.  Only plus is no trim damage or wiper issues and the sensor works perfectly and the gel is bubble free.  Had I not watched his every move I think he would of tried to use the original gel pack which was clearly damaged when removed!  Won't be using him again tho nice guy but he has far to much work on for just him.  Finished mine @ 5 and still had 2 jobs to do.  Genuine gel picks are £30+ from VW so they told me

When my windscreen got replaced (about a month ago?) the "gel pack"  was a roll of clear gel tape that the Autoglass tech cut to fit.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

In all honesty I think any gel type stuff would be fine as long as the thickness is correct.  The pattern part may have been ok had he not stuck his finger in the middle of it  causing it to become dirty and less tacky.  The sensor tack is good as its applied via a syringe and finds its own level
