Are people regularly damaging their 19" wheels?
« on: 13 August 2015, 13:08 »
My dealer is pushing his £500 tyre and alloy insurance and I can see the value as the tyres aren't cheap and the wheels will be expensive to repair/replace. But are people really ruining their wheels as often as they're telling me?

Just wondered how owners are getting on and if they've found them to be overly delicate in kerb/pot hole encounters.

Cheers!

I have kerbed the back offside on mine, got a quote for a refurb at £45 through VW. So unless you're absolutely crap at driving I don't think it's worth the money imo

Fredgroves - she might, but she is very careful too

It's for 3 years, up to 10 wheel repairs, unlimited puncture repairs up to £50 each, up to 5 tyre replacements and replacement wheel up to a maximum policy figure (not sure what that is though). I reckon if you were the driving equivilent of Mr Magoo, you'd get great value from this but I'm not so sure.

Looking at the state of other cars on the road... some people could use this! Mind you... they'd always have one or more wheels in for repair...

£500 is a hell of a price and I would like to see the circumstances in writing where they would actually end up giving you a new wheel rather than refurbing.

I would treat it like dealer priced Gap insurance, paint protection etc.

Personally I'd keep that amount of money aside and take the risk if your comfortable with it.

Just another commission perk for the salesman and not needed, line your pockets instead of his.

You would have to do some impressive damage to have that work in your favour

Be careful as well as they often don't cover for repair of diamond cut alloys, or will only offer a partial payment.
