Newbie with a story.....
« on: 08 August 2015, 18:49 »
Hi all,

After recently owning and now selling an E46 330ci M-sport convertible BMW (below)....

I've bought a new car, a MK4 VW Golf 1.8 Turbo (150bhp AUM), and you need to read the full story to understand why.....

After years of Jap Turbo cars, 6 x Imprezas, 1 x Mitsubishi Evo 6, and my all time favourite Nissan Skyline R33 GTR, I took a break from tuned cars to experience something different, but wanted a straight 6, so bought an E36 convertible, which then was sold for a more modern E46 330ci m-sport convertible.... but here's where my story really starts.....

In early June 2015, my best friend in the world, Jamie Madden, was tragically killed whilst working on our friends car, leaving behind a beautiful wife, Hannah, and 2 gorgeous children, Thea, aged 1, and my Godson Taylan, aged 3.

I used to race in competition with J on the 1/4 mile drag strip in our Skylines, but his passion was track driving and he went all over to pursue his interest, and he never tired of telling me I needed to join him, something I always resisted as I'm not confident on track having done a few over the years.

Anyhow, I had cracked and agreed in May 2015 that I would do a track day with J and we'd use his Skyline, share all costs etc, and we were to book it on his return from holiday at the beginning of June.

Jamie Madden was tragically killed just a few days after his family holiday whilst working on our friends car, something which will forever hurt me. I was honoured to carry his coffin and lower him down to his final resting place, but I miss him every day.

In Jamie's memory, I have a track day booked in on the 5th of October at Silverstone (F1 circuit) and I've bought a Golf 1.8 turbo with 108000 miles on it for £1300 in very good but standard condition, bar Weitec coilovers.

I wanted FWD as I feel most confident with those driven wheels and anything to get me out there is what was needed. I also love the MK4 Golf size and shape, not a perfect track car base I'm sure you'll agree, but it has some nice potential to unlock...

So here it starts.......

Did you know Jamie personally?  He was a top man, loved by everyone who met him, I personally adored him.
I hope to do him justice, but i also know that by just being out there he would be smiling from ear to ear.

No Cliff i didn't know him.But reading your post, led me to the GTR forum.I can see why you've dedicated your mission to him.Reading about him he sounds like someone i'd have been proud to have had as a friend.
Good luck with your build.

Very, very sorry to hear of your loss. I can't even imagine losing my best friend - he's like family to me.

I think this is an amazing thing you're doing in memory of Jamie, and although I quite obviously don't know him - I'm sure he'd be overjoyed you're finally getting on the track!

Good on you mate, and I'm curious to see what shape the MK4 takes in the next month or so!

Thanks for sharing your story.
