None taken

Must say I do see more golf R's than 330d's on my daily commute though.. Never sure if they are R line tdi's or the real deal though until I am close up

Sorry couldn't resist !!  Let's face it, all the big car companies use the same tricks !!
Daily drive - LCI BMW 330 D Estoril Blue & Saddle leather. M sport + Pack / Prof Nav / Head Up / Heated Seats
On the way - CS ed 40 tornado red, manual, 3 door
Weekend fun - low mileage portofino blue 1997 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo
2017 Build Slot reserved for BMW M2

The Golf is a shopping trolley whether it is a GTD/GTI/R. They are 4cyl hatches. A 6 pot  BMW F30 is an amazing car and no Golf or Audi A3 (whether S3 or RS3 with its 5 pot lump) provides that extra je ne sais quoi one gets with a 6 pot BMW F30.

Drive an sDrive 6 pot F30 BMW and be amazed. To have an obtuse opinion on a car when one has not even driven one is so blinkered, stupid and pointless.

Nothing against BMW's per se, but why is it so hard for some to accept that for many of us a 4cyl shopping trolley in GTD/GTI/R guise, is quite good enough, nay, actually most definitely good enough?

Hear, hear.
(Polite applause)
And especially those amongst us that actually have one in our tenure in one guise or another.
A Golf is a good balance of most things and just about affordable to the masses (give or take).
Unless you modify it then it won't generally set your pulse racing but it's the right blend of "nice" at its price and size point.

A 330d is a wonderful machine.
But it's also much bigger and more expensive than a Golf.

I guess it would be nice to own both...

Likewise.
I have massive respect for many BMW's but none of them quite hit the spot for me.
As for Oysters, just NOOOOOO! They stink, that's enough for me.

Would not have a 3 series BMW due to personal preference of not liking bigger cars. Its that simple for me to exclude.

There is one other issue for me with BMW in general (not sure if this has been resolved in anyway outside of x Drive so open to correction) and that was in last bad winter seeing my company car park littered with BMW who slipped and slide away from the rear and were eventually left abandoned. In reality there is only small gradients but they were basically left un-driveable. Add in the stories of colleagues leaving their BMW in the drives as cannot get them out and that does certainly have you thinking twice about seriously considering.

Understand that BMW is a real drivers car with the rear wheel drive and on a track that's a lot of fun but most of us will be driving on UK roads on standard tyres in pretty poor conditions for at least a decent chunk of the year and the BMW in standard form would lose me something that quite like having in the feeling of being very sure footed. Reason think of moving to R is to give me more sure footedness so for me its a bigger issue than maybe for others in not looking at BMW

Used to not like style of BMW to much, but think the facelifts of all the models have been pretty good and catch the eye far more so on that front would be more interested then ever been but rear wheel drive and power in UK conditions is something that does put big tick in the against box when weighing pros and cons.

Last winter was not too bad so not something imagine was too much of a problem overall but am interested if this is seen as an issue now?

Will say that the 330D selected here does look stunning and sure drives amazingly too based on all reviews read and good to see that a GTI forum debates another brand so openly on face value without much of pettiness that see elsewhere where it gets really personal and think that's credit to regular members here and real contributors of informative posts and responses  (definitely not including myself in that category!)

Its good to read about other marquee models too as you need comparison to see where own preference stands so long may that openness continue.
