What is here and there is the clunkiness of a manual car. Horrid things IMO.

You need to learn some clutch control.  I do find the DSG quite jerky in the 2>1 downchange whenever i'm in one. 10% on the mpg front might not seem much, but it is significant when people choose DSG thinking that their mpg is going to be better.

Anyone primarily choosing DSG for it's mpg benefits is missing the point of it!

Agree,

I wouldn't have thought anybody would have chosen DSG in the first place for better MPG as nearly every model has worse mpg figures on paper.

I apologise and appreciate that the BMW is a fantastic car but I can't help but see it as a rep mobile. In the past I have tried to love them but I'd sooner have my toenails pulled out and put in a pie that I have to eat.
If I was a rep however, the 330d would make me work even harder to obtain one for bragging rights on the travelodge car park.
For what it's worth,you only live once,an RS3 or a BMW,come on.
We will have to agree to disagree I'm afraid.

The BMW 3 series (mainly swathes of 320d) becoming the new Ford Mondeo in the preferred rep/lower management company car is the main reason that BMWs are punching well below their weight on the residuals front.

They've gone in heavy on the fleet market in the last 8 years and it has hurt the private buyer. They're not a car that is generally bought new with private money these days, and for that reason it's essential to get a huge discount off a new one to keep the depreciation losses reasonable. Nice cars though, if I were to get behind the wheel of one I would definitely be going for the 3.0L 6 cylinder diesel unit.

On the other hand, there are plenty of charvas coming from 10 year old Halfords special Clios and Corsas jumping into a dirt cheap leased R. I do think it was a once only, not to be repeated offer to get the word out, but seemed a puzzling move by VW seeing as the R was starting to get heard of through its reviews and anyone buying one privately had to generally wait longer for theirs.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I know, and agree.I have never even driven a BMW and who knows I probably would enjoy the experience.
I come over in a cold sweat and nausea even passing a BMW dealership.

Andy

No issue with your view - each to their own.  I drove all the cars back to back and while the RS3 is a great car no way I would pay 50k for one..

I can honestly say the 330d left me gob smacked when I drove it hard.. It's far from a rep mobile and tbh I like the fact most people don't have any idea of the performance on offer.  For 34k the deal I got, I didn't, in the end, come close to ordering an S3 or anything else because the refinement was way ahead of all the others..

Running costs are a small but real consideration and the bmw delivered 42 mpg on my very hard test drive.. The golf gti 28, the S3 and R about 25-26.. And I would wager over most roads the bmw would easily keep up with the others..

In vanilla spec the 3 series is dull, but with the 3 liter engine, M sport plus pack with bigger brakes etc it's a very compelling package.. You should at least drive one..  I live the golf gti but ultimately they are all 4 cyl hatches..
