High Pressure Fuel Pump Leak
« on: 07 August 2015, 19:54 »
Hello guys,

Noticed a smell of petrol in the cabin of the car the other day and thought it was just a figment of my imagination or another car nearby.

After lifting the bonnet it was quite easy to track the smell down to the high pressure fuel pump which is coated in petrol. Saw a couple of users on the R forum with the same problem in their R's. Dodgy seals. Might be worth being aware of. I'll post a picture later.

This is a well known warranty issue for the US cars. There is a whole thread on golfmk7 forum about this. Haven't heard of such a case in the UK until now.

I'm ringing VW tomorrow to book it in for replacement even though it has a service booked for next Saturday and my R is waiting for me.

Just had my fuel pump replaced it had started leaking very slightly but you could smell fuel in the cabin and under the passengers wheel arch. The car is 10/63 and is now 5 months out of warranty and has done 11500 miles, dealer did not charge for the pump just for the labour only £180 so not too bad, it pays to read forums
This maybe one for the future if they have not modified the part.

My car is the same age as yours and failed it's first MOT on this. Mine is similarly low mileage to yours, having covered just under 14k to date.

Did they replace it free of charge they should of if it was the first MOT as they car was still with in the warranty period.

Yes, it was warranty, as was a new drive shaft boot - but I had optioned the 5 year warranty.
