How long should tyres last
« on: 06 August 2015, 22:30 »
So my car has just turned 11k miles and just noticed tonight the front tyres are pretty much worn down to the indicator, they are Conti 2s, would of thought they would last longer than that as they've had a very easy life with my driving style, can really notice the difference driving but I'm reluctant to change them as my new car is due in a few months or so, should I just change the rears to the fronts ? Hat scrimping but I hate the thought of spending £250 on a car I won't own by October lol

I used to have sport conti 2's on a a3 Quattro. I never got more than 12k out of a set. They are good grippy tires but do wear quick in my experience. But I always put it down to being a 3.2 V6 Quattro. It gets expensive when doing 18k a year, new set of tyres roughly every 9 months at a cost of £140 per corner!

Swap them out (backs to fronts), I did - new car on 18k miles and after swapping on 12 months, all tyres were barely legal at 20 months when the R arrived.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Guess I'll do this then, it's not in my nature to scrimp on a car but this time I feel I won't benefit from it

All 4 tyres (Conti 2) at the limit after 10500 miles (swapped at around 6000)

Don't know whether it was the heat of Cyprus that made them wear faster though?

Well I currently have 16,500 miles on my Tombstones (sorry - Bridgestones) on the GTD and they still have a minimum of 4mm left all round (5mm on the backs), so should see 20,000 no problem.

Maybe that's why they don't grip as well as others like the Conti's as they must be quite a hard tyre ?

Andrew the Bridgestones are a hard tyre compared to a continental but the trade off is you seem to be getting good mpg's from yours. I got 14k out of the fronts on mind and they were conti 2s. Replaced all 4 for conti 5s as I had an unrepairable puncture on the back and note I'm trading the gtd in for a tiguan.

Sorry to hear you are leaving the Golf fold bud.

TBH, I've never been a fan of SUV's (we have too many BMW X3's here at work), but (and I'm not just saying this because you are getting one), there's something about the Tiguan that I've always liked - especially in white in the R-Line guise.

I did actually look at one before the Golf myself in 2013, but the wife wasn't keen on a bigger vehicle. When you do you it BTW and what spec ?
