New wheels going on, need help with wheel bolts
« on: 06 August 2015, 10:11 »
Hi all,

New wheels (BBS SR) are going on within the next few days, however I have a problem.

The wheels were supplied with 20x Silver non locking wheel bolts (the wheels are tapered seat, so need to change them) and I have a few problems with this...

1. The wheels are quite dark and the bolt heads will stick out like a sore thumb so I'm looking for black ones.
2. The wheel bolts are not locking wheel bolts - After shelling out £1300 on wheels and tyres I'd rather have locking wheel bolts.
3. I might be tempted to stick a set of 5mm spacers on the rear to get them as flush as the fronts will be.

Now I've seen some bolts with locking bolts on ebay. Quality looks pretty good but they are listed as being longer than standard and suitable (but not ONLY SUITABLE) for cars fitted with 5 or 10mm spacers.

So, to save me messing around measuring bolts etc, can anyone tell me if having 5-10mm more bolt protruding from the rear of the hub would be a problem or is it a 'suck it and see' problem.

I suppose I could pop a wheel off (counting the revolutions of the wheel bolt) and then measuring how far in an extra 10mm would be, pop one of the bolts back in and spin the wheel to see if it hits anything but it just seems a bit long winded when hopefully someone may have an answer (and I've got a bad neck which means I'd really prefer not to do it lol)!

Ta in advance.

as a temporary thing, order some nut caps from a SEAT dealer from a Leon Cupra R.
They cost pennies each and black the nuts off nicely.
I used a set with my BBS wheels.

The wheels look great by the way (saw them in the other thread)

Actually spotted a Cupra 280 down the road from me, I'll get some.

Just need to (eventually) find a set of lockers that the SEAT caps (for the lockers) fit.

I'm assuming that when you buy a set of caps, 1 in 5 of them will be the shape (internally) to accomodate the locking nuts, as they would be on the wheels that come with a MK7 Golf.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

You buy them individually MH, about 30 odd pence each.
So 20 of non lockers or any mix you wish.

Bought 20 covers for non lockers this very day.

I was going to buy 5 covers for locking bolts but apparently they have 2 types. I perhaps should have bought one to see if I can get some locking bolts that fit it perfectly but I'll have to go back and get one sometime.

Or, (and I'll probalby join and post on a seat forum to do it) I'll just need to find out what diameter the standard lockers are on a SEAT so I can (hopefully) find a set of locking bolts to match.

They use the same bolts as Volkswagen, lockers and all.
What would be handy would be to find what model of VW or SEAT use longer factory bolts than a Golf/Leon/Octavia/A3 so you could buy OEM lockers in the correct length for those that are running spacers on standard wheels. Not much use when you're running aftermarket I know.

Anyway, the head size on a Leon locking bolt is the same as the ones on your Golf.
