I use winter tyres all year round. They aren't that bad during the summer but great when the temp drops below 7 degrees. I've had ug8's on the front for 25k miles, they are about due for a change now. I'm happy running winters full time, it suits me.

Winter tyres performance drops dramatically compared to all year round tyres after just a few mm has worn down.
In fact I read a few articles that recommended changing them when they got to 5mm or thereabouts.

Winters would be my preference though all year round.

There are combination tyres called all seasons which work all year round

People seem to think you need a second set of alloys for winter tyres. You really don't.

Definitely don't but you have found somewhere that charges a very cheap price as most places will charge £10 a wheel.

So your wife only pays £50 a year for the 2 changes which is excellent as over an average ownership of 36 months that is a reasonable £150.
Which if she bought 2nd hand alloys off ebay she would probably have paid that anyway but chances are you would also sell them again at more or less the same price so costs you nothing over the 36 months.

My only concern getting the tyres changed twice a year apart from the price is the increased chance of them being damaged. Regardless of how careful a fitter is it does increase the chances.

I've never been keen on a jack of all trades master of none, of anything in life.   Much better buying stuff that is tailored for something specific. But that's just me.

True. The usual price seems to be £40-50. Though we have a half price deal as we bought the tyres there. Other places offered a similar discount.

Not everyone has the required fitness, strength or skills to change their own tyres. (I don't think I have ever seen a fat tyre fitter! There is a reason for that.)

Yes, there is a higher risk of the alloys getting minor cosmetic damaged.

As for all season tyres - stopping distances and cornering are just not as good as the summer/winter tyre options. I want maximum safety for me and especially my wife.

All seasons are still better than winters in summer or summer in winter .... 

Ran some for a while... nothing is better than the proper tyres for the season though. Summers when it's over 7 consistently or winters when it's under......

I don't think the British climate warrants full winter tyres although every area will be different. We don't suffer with months of snow and ice but more colder temperatures. All weather tyres fit our climate better at the moment.

I've got my 2 daughters and wife winter tyres with alloys. The golf sadly misses out 

Even if it is just for that one occasion when it snows heavily and you are thankful you have winter tyres. I just think it gives piece of mind.
The way I look at it is it doesn't cost me any more even although I have paid out for wheels for the winters to go on.
You can only wear one set of tyres out at a time so each set lasts longer then the wheels are sold when the car gets changed.

For them it also freshens up the look of the car twice a year as women can't resist a new set of shoes
