Can the DSG box be re-set to re-learn again
« on: 27 July 2015, 16:32 »
Now before all the comments about "what's why I stuck to a manual", I'd like to say that I absolutely love the DSG box (my second car with it) and the next car will certainly have it as well.

Now I've got that of my chest onto the question

Sometimes (just sometimes), when in say in fourth gear, and slowing down on a trailing throttle (say for a roundabout), if the junction is clear and I go to move off, and do this with a prod of the accelerator (just quite a light throttle application), the car will jump instantly from fourth to second with the result there's an unpleasant jerk of acceleration as it launches off, then almost instantly jumps into third and so fourth and all is good again.

This phenomenon only occurs on a trailing throttle followed by light acceleration (and like I say, only sometimes). Normal pull off's and general gear changing is as smooth as a baby's bum, as I've come to expect from the DSG6 and it's only this small glitch that detracts from an otherwise superb driving experience.

I've read somewhere (or dreamt it), that the dealer (or using VCDS) can re-set the DSG mechatronics unit back to factory so that the unit can re-learn my driving style again (and hopefully this might sort it) ?

Has anyone ever heard or done this before, as I just can't see a dealer entertaining this one at all under warranty when it goes in for it's annual service in early September.

From memory you can do a DSG reset via VCDS

I had my dealer do a DSG reset as my car was throwing up errors saying it could not select a gear when was working fine and has been fine since

You can indeed do a DSG reset via VCDS

The process is quite involved and you need a clear stretch of road ideally as it involves driving at certain speeds for certain periods of time etc etc. i was going to do one on my mates S4 until a Fiesta hit it and wrote it off

Should be a how-to on the Ross Tech website

Does the DSG box really learn your habbits over time? Have you been teaching it bad things Sooty?

It can be done on most auto/dsg boxes accept as already mention it is quite time consuming and requires good clear roads to enable you to drive at set speeds & brake accordingly.  I looked at doing it on my 535d but any slight errors or mishaps & you have to start all over again.  If you really want to try it the best place is a disused airfield if you have one locally?  Trying to do it on a normal road would be almost impossible

Cant' you just kindly as your dealer to do it? I mean, your car isn't behaving how you want it to, meaning you're not entirely happy with the product purchased, therefore within warranty the dealer should be obliged to do something about it - I assume a "reset" would be the first thing they try?

Or am I asking too much from a dealer

Exactly that's why I am never convinced when a dealer says we have done it.
