TMC vs DTUK

Looking at getting a box for my R

Anyone had any experience with both of these boxes? I know DTUK has a mixed response. I had one on my GTI which I returned because there wasn't a noticeable power difference and response felt weak compared to the JFA box I had used previously. TMC have a good history but I don't know if any first hand feedback. Anyone had one?

No complaints from me for the DTUK box on my GTD and my dad continues to enjoy it in his, I did find the TDItuning one poor.

DTUK: Smooth, linear power delivery, no real life mpg penalty, slight over-read on the MFD mpg feels exactly like the stock map +30% at every stage of the throttle press, halved the number of DPF regens the car underwent vs stock. Off boost a tuning box will do nothing for you - don't forget that the old 2.0SDI (non-turboed) units only used to put out 75PS, the car will only have a fraction of its output off boost.

TDItuning: Harsh power delivery, not linear, induced wheelspin at 60mph in 3rd under hard acceleration (I feared for the longevity of my clutch), thirsty, induced twice as many regens as stock.

I have no opinion on the TMC system as I have not used it.

Some may "feel" the TDItuning box is doing more as you feel that kick, but don't mistake smooth and linear power delivery with a lack of response - take a look at how much quicker your rev counter and speedo dials are moving when you put your foot down without kicking 7 shades out of your clutch, and don't expect much difference off boost.

I never dynoed mine, but I have a good rough power comparison tool when I change the car or make changes to it. There is a sliproad off a certain roundabout and onto dual carriageway near where I live. I exit that small sliproad at 25mph floor it, then check the speed at which I attain when I pass a certain sign.

For my GTD, it was passing the sign at 82mph unaltered and 89mph with the DTUK box on, the R gets to 98mph (or did with 600 miles on it - it might be slightly better now). As the DTUK box gets the GTD to perform pretty much bang in the middle of a stock GTD and R on my test, I find it easy to believe that it got my GTD kicking out 230-240ps, and the extra torque was easily noticed.

Johnc41 was the fella.
He's left here and now pops up on the R forum from time to time. He only had his GTI a short time then traded it for an R, then another R, then another...
Think he's now on a remap...

He will no doubt be back on here when he's bored of his R400 and moved on to a mk8 GTI!

I had a search last night and found JohnC, looking at the topics he says its powerful and feels a lot better but doesn't give any numbers on what he achieved. I found a company in Norwich who do custom remaps so might venture over there to have a chat....

It would be well worth a chat with the custom mappers to see where they buy in their base maps from and what kit they use to write the maps but more so - what development they put into it.
Not that they'll give up all of that information readily!
