Golf R fuel consumption
« on: 17 July 2015, 21:40 »
I'm thinking of trading up from my GTI PP to an R and, although I know you don't buy an R for its economy, can R owners give me an idea of the real comsumption figures with everyday use.  On a 200 mile run yesterday in the GTI following the holiday traffic in the West Country I managed 39mpg. How does the R compare with similar driving?

"Similar driving" is subjective - what was the cruising speed you were aiming for when not in average speed camera zones or traffic etc? On my 20 mile commute, about 1/2 of it is doing 50-60mph and the other 1/2 is at 80mph. In this weather we're experiencing right now, i'm averaging 32mpg. The 60mph leg would likely be achieving 36-37mpg, the 80mph stretch is more like 28mpg. I'm guessing that on a really long journey maintaining 80mph, I might get between 30 and 32mpg, maintaining 70mph it will be more like 36mpg.

I haven't yet cracked 1900 miles, but Shell Momentum 99 is my preferred fuel, Essoo wasn't nice at all, and a close second to Tesco's finest is Shell V-power Nitro.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Mines still got less than 1k on the clock so this might not be a true reading long term.
Mk7 GTI PP had 31 mpg average on the MFD generally, whilst running 95 RON and the R is showing 26mpg running Tesco Momentum.

I ran both my GTI (remapped) and R on V power. The MFD on the GTI was around 32-33mpg, and yeah I could manage 40mpg on a run. The R has an average of 27-28mpg long term and can manage 33-34mpg on a run if I'm very careful.

Thanks for the response which has been very useful.  One thing that has been brought to mind is the use of premium fuel.  As I live in darkest Dorset my nearest garage selling premium (Texaco) is 20 miles away and Tesco a further 6 miles on.  I've used 95 RON in my GTI without any problems. Does the R have problems with the lower grade fuel?

The R doesn't run on 95RON fuel. It's optimised for minimum 98 or above. What part of Dorset are you from? I grew up in Dorchester many moons ago.

Nonsense. If that were the case I'd be in bother because you can't get 98RON anywhere in Ireland!

The R will run all day long on 95Ron. Sure, it's "optimised" for 98 but it'll run on the lower octane no problem... If it didn't, VW wouldn't market it here, nor would BMW / Audi market their high performance cars.

I wouldn't call it nonsense.....

The ECU will be optimised for 98RON and above, if you can't get it in Ireland I'm sure they have pulled timing back along with power to compensate.

I would say 30mpg was a real world figure. Mine has has done 4500 miles now and I have just spent the last week in Cornwall and did foolishly think I might get a little bit more but I was I was lugging this around
Full of camping gear !! It doesn't seem to make any difference what I do. Rag it like I stole it or drive it like a vicar 30mpg seem to be the constant. I have run it totally on Shell V Power Nitro since day 1.

Go for it. You know you want to !!

Lol JB I have the same issue. I can do whatever I want to mine and literally makes no difference to fuel economy over a tank. The best I managed was a 300mile run to Lowestoft from Dorchester at night with the ACC set at 70 because I was tired. I managed 34.5mpg.
