I am trying to get my golf through the MOT so have changed the gearbox engine mount..it has made a difference..now I need to change the other rear mount. There appears to be a bracket attached to the top of the mount and the lambda sensor plugs into it. There are a few bolts holding that on. I have been told that the mount is underneath that. Just wondering if that bracket is what the engine is resting on? I had to raise the engine considerably to remove the gearbox mount..I loosened the front mount to do this. Initially I tried to raise the engine under the oil sump but it didn't go high enough so I raised the engine under the gearbox..so just wondering where would be the best place to raise the engine if I want to remove the rear right mount and do I need to loosen the other two mounts before I raise the engine? I had some difficulties getting the top bolts for the other two engine mounts back in (front and gearbox) so would like to avoid that. Also where is it best to raise the engine for the rear right mount..should I just use a board under the rear of the oil sump? I don't want to mess up the other two mounts as they are working perfectly now..

VW and Haynes both say to put a beam across the top and lift engine from the eye on cylinder head until the right side rear mount carries no weight anymore. As you're not taking all the weight off all the mounts you shouldn't need to undo the others.

If you have some spare 2 by 4 pieces of wood you can build an I-beam (use a 1ft long piece for the ends that go on where wings are bolted on (cover bottom with foam tape) and 2 on top of each other for across (maybe 4, i.e. 2 on top and next to each other). Then get a ratchet strap and put the hook in eye on cylinder head, ratchet end being screwed onto your improvised hoist.

If you disconnect the lambda sensor plug from it's bracket that is bolted to the top of the metal engine mount to start with you will see that the bolt that holds that bracket on is the one that goes into the engine mount you are talking the about.Remove that bolt completely. You will have to remove the pipe from airbox to throttle body first though.

You can leave the gearbox mount as it is but you should remove the bolt completely from the front engine mount.

You can then jack engine up with a piece of wood wrapped in a cloth on the drivers end of the sump.If you are clever you can just jack it on power steering pump and have someone else rock the engine forward when you go to remove the mount.

Then get underneath and undo the 2 x 8mm bolts that hold the mount in place (13mm spanner/socket) and lift old mount out.

Your post reminded me that mine needed doing so i just did it.Took me an hour and a half, taking it easy.

I started by removing the air intake pipe and then slid the lambda sensor connector off of it's bracket, towards the drivers side of car,no need to unplug it.

Then i used a 13mm long socket (3/8 drive) and ratchet to take the nut off that holds the lambda sensor bracket as there is not much room to swing a spanner.Below that bracket there is another bigger nut,it's 16mm.You can use a small spark plug socket if you have one,the size used on 16v abf plugs.

Undo that bolt and take it right out.

If you look down at the bottom of the mount you will see one of the bolts that holds it in place, you can remove that from the top using extension bars and a 13mm socket.

Now you need to jack the car up.I used a hilift jack between the rear of the drivers side front wheel and end of the sill.Jacked up on the part in front of the anti roll bar.

Once it was up i crawled underneath and loosened off all 4 bolts that hold the metal L shaped bracket to the back of the engine. Then i used another jack and a lump of 2 x 2 and jacked up the engine on the rear outside corner of the sump.

Once the engine was supported i carried on taking the 4 bolts out of the L shaped metal mounting and removed it from the engine bay completely.

Now you are left with just 1 bolt holding the engine mount in place,it is directly opposite the first one you took out from the top and is fairly easy to get to with a 13mm spanner (make sure you have a good fot on that bolt as you really don't wanna slip and round it off !!!)

Once you remove that bolt just pull the mount out and then reverse the process to get it all back together.

I put a few drips of oil on each bolt and had someone wiggle the engine whilst i put the main bolt back in as it was a pain to line up.

There is no need to undo the front engine mount or anything else, you only really need to jack the engine up a small amount, basically to support it whilst you remove the metal L shaped engine mount which gives you more room.

Good luck.
