Petrol Gauge Problem...Please Help
« on: 21 September 2005, 18:48 »
Hello Guys & Ladies,

I have a 1996 on a P Plate VW Golf GTI 2.0 8V 3-door Hatchback, and have a little crazy problem....

It is Intermittent, where as when i put say £15 quids worth of petrol in the tank, a few days later and leave the car running for a while the gauge moves from quarter to nearly empty, but if l then drive it a few miles it slowly corrects it self.  It is very annoying...  :undecided:

Please Help....  Could it be something stupid as in a bad earth or would it be the sender at fault...? or the gauge...?

Your help is much appreciated...

Cheers

I used to notice this on my Mk2 - my Mk3 doens't suffer though.... It was down to the alternator output on the Mk2 - basically I changed the brush pack on the alternator and the problem went away! Apparently, the voltage can stray away from the 14.4v normal output, and when it does, things like the gauges give screwy results.... Get a 'lectrician to check it by all means but I bet you'll find it's your alternator......

HTH (and welcome BTW!)
