Had 45mpg on a run from Stafford to Fort William with air con on auto at 20°C, 43mpg on the way back but I did use cruise control so that eats the fuel more.

I haven't had the air con on much in my 9 weeks of ownership, that maybe because I've had the Pano roof open a lot  or it could be because its been a lousy summer

Does anyone notice a loss in power when the air con is on?  I remember in the old mk 4's when you had it on it felt like it used half the engine power

This is the main reason to turn it off.  My MK 4 2.0 (I still have it) has a noticeable power loss if it's hot and the aircon is working hard.  Not so noticeable on the MK 7 but it must consume a few KW of power.

If you're cruising no problem leave it on but when the tailgating BMW appears in the rear view mirror turn it off until he's gone away.

You get that sort of MPG on a golf R?

That's a very special R to get that MPG. If I sit at that. I will be getting 34ish

No idea how i managed it either, best ive managed since is 38.6 sitting at 60 on a B road, coming down slightly to almost 36 after the full journey (same route down the a1 but diversion from a19-a1)
