Some interesting R and GTi discounts from Carwow
« on: 08 July 2015, 20:41 »

Sent a couple of fairly standard spec quotes for R and GTi PP through Carwow yesterday to see what sort of current deals are out there..

I must admit the GTi PP with better standard spec of Satnav, Keyless and Winter Pack, along with the £1250 deposit is looking more appealing.  Wasn't sure what discounts on the R were out there - for me, both cars are appealing in more basic spec / price ie the GTi at £25k no more and an R at under £30k, once you go over these figures it just feels to much for a Golf.. no matter how good.

Anyway I had 6 offers back via Carwow today for a GTi PP in white, 5 door manual with sunroof and a 5 door manual R in white with sunroof, winter pack.

I had one "offer" of 0% discount on the R - very strange !

Anyway I had a couple of offers of around 10% discount on the R, giving a price of £29,544.

I had a couple of offers of nearly 12% off the GTi before the deposit contribution - with the cash price coming in at £25,700 or £24,500 with the deposit contribution.  Not a bad price for a 5 door PP Gti with Nav, keyless, winter, sunroof ?  Looking on the used website, that spec of new car looks pretty decent..

How do these line up with what people have achieved ?  Did someone also say you can take the finance then settle it within 14 days ?

A while back (Jan) I achieved 12.5% on my R with DrivetheDeal. I had a quote from Orangewheels which was a bit lower discount than DTD.  Also had about 6 Carwow offers but these were quite a bit short on the DTD and OW discounts.  The upside to Carwow is the dealers often do p/x whereas DTD and OW don't so you need to offload old car yourself.

I think the finance thing is correct.  Take it out, then pay it in full within 14 days, but I'm sure someone else will confirm.

Yes you can take our a PCP than cancel pay in cash and retain the deposit contribution. This was confirmed to me by a dealer last week. What a winner

I'd be a bit careful with the underlying dealers on carwow.

I secured a 12 percent discount and went with the cheapest dealer who said they could get my spec GTI pp (dynamic chassis, pp, Dynaudio, climate screen) in 12 to 13 weeks, delivery start if June.

I paid my deposit and here we are with a build week confirmed 20 th July and delivery probably late August.

Also the dealer refused to give the £1250 through pcp on top of discount.

It's probably worked out ok as I didn't desperately need car and will hopefully get the nav, keyless etc for free.

That could happen with any dealer though not just Carwow ones which at the end of the day are just run of the mill dealers that have got involved in the scheme.

It sounds like the quote they gave you included the £1250 contribution as it has nothing to do with the dealers but is VW specific. I don't mean to sound nasty but it is probably one of those things that you should have researched first before parting with your cash. Or at least asked about if you knew about the VW contribution.

@drisser I used carwow a while back for quotes and what I was surprised at was 3 dealers were willing to discount further after their initial offer.

Indeed - you need to be very careful with this sort of underhandedness. if you use Drivethedeal you will see they confirm that the the deals include the 1250 deposit contribution - but as a result come in at around 17% off!

If it was me I would be fuming and would cancel the order and take a Drivethedeal quote or equivalent that does not sneakily use the VWFS contribution to artificially make their prices look competitive...

I've been using Carwow over the last week or so to get some quotes for a new car for my partner.  The offers page is pretty clear as it shows two prices - one cash price and one finance.  So I don't see anything that isn't transparent about their offers.

Having said that Drive the Deal are once again well ahead of the Carwow offers in terms of discount.  I've bought five cars through them over the years and it's always been great.  The only downside is that the dealer could be anywhere, but I've always enjoyed making a trip out of collecting the car and driving it home (I'm not a fan of getting it delivered).
