I'm not sure a straight mirror of the phone screen is what you get ever?

From what I've seen the connected apps have a different screen layout on the car screen - big huge buttons for you to push to do stuff etc etc

I think its working like an auxiliary screen for the phone onto which the app projects a different UI.

If its just the "video in motion" thing you've got to overcome, I believe that's already possible to do in VCDS - although quite why you'd want to watch video while driving... unless you are a lorry driver of course.

You're probably right. Things like Internet radio and some different traffic apps might be useful though...

This demo looks like an exact mirror of the screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J5KNaaVRoQ

It is a mirror of the screen, but the phone itself has gone into Duplo mode if you notice...

There are 3 different types of technology apparently incorporated by VW in the MIB 2 - MirrorLink, Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

Each system has its own foibles and potential advantages.

For example, Android Auto will only work with some phones, Apple Car Play is only for Iphones and also doesn't yet support anything but a wired connection and so on.

I think the advance forward is great, but I think you are going to be quite disappointed with just how little progress they've actually made.

Give it another 5 years and the MIB 4 on the Golf Mk9...

I don't have a smartphone so I'm at a loss straight away. I'll be stuck with whatever my wife has on her Android phone. I was thinking of buying something like a personal WiFi spot, 4G from EE to use with the 'guide and inform' side of things as that might be more useful to me.

In 5 years they'll probably have the reversing camera on something like Google glasses.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the VW provided services under "guide and inform" will not be terribly good compared to those available as either a mobile phone app or from a website.

They will be paying a third party for the data and if the list of things I have available on my navpro (MIB 1) is anything to go by then its either a case of the data gathering company being sh!t or not being paid enough for stuff to appear.

I was looking for a MaccyDee's the other day, it gave me a list of them from 35 miles outwards from my current position. A quick google told me that there was one 4 miles from me and when I got there it wasn't even a new one - I remembered it from years ago from the last time I was down that way.

Can but hope it's up to scratch.

I won't be disappointed either way. I'm about to get a MK7 GTi, can't be disappointed about that, I miss my MK5 and I've had a 1.6 Fiesta for the last 4 years (brill drive for the price but a long way off a Golf).
