Anyone know whats done at services ?
« on: 03 July 2015, 13:51 »
Hi all. Just a quick question please. As my car is approaching its second birthday soon, it will soon be enjoying the second of it's three free services (that i negotiated with the purchase of the car) from VW.

As i understand it, the second (or 2 year / 20,000 mile) service is classed as a major service, but for the life of me i can't see in any of the books and manuals supplied with the car, what each service actually consists of ?

Just for my own interests sake, does anyone know please ?

Apart from the normal oil/filter change its only the addition of the Dust & Pollen filter at two years.
Initial brake fluid change is now at three years.

Diesel Fuel filter is not until 90,000kms.
Air filter is 90,000kms or 6 years.

The rest must be visual checks.

They charge you more, that's it!

Look in the service book at the intervals for what they do (I can't be arsed).

The trouble is that they changed the service book detail.

It no longer gives the full detail in the way of a specific list as in the past.
All you get now is a tick for Oil Change service or Inspection Service with mileage or timings and a tick box for fluids or filters they might be changing.

They just run the latest service schedule list off the VW computer specific to your car for the tech.
You are right about charging more for it.

My second service 20,000 (Inspection Service) only had more labour time ( for all those visual checks !! )

Exactly as TwoSheds said MH. The service manuals no longer describe what work is done (instead referring you to VW), that's why I asked.

I thought it was a case of RTM - I should have known better as it is you asking, very fastidious.

They used to tell you everything about the service schedules. In days gone by year 2 would have spark plugs changed, air filter and pollen filter, as well as the oil. Year 3 would be oil and brake fluid, year 4 would be DSG and/or Haldex fluid change etc.

I did my run-in oil change today - piece of cake. The hardest part is keeping the old oil contained as it pours out of the sump. I probably managed to spill 100mL of the 5.5L* that came out onto the road next to the kerb, the rest going into a couple of containers that went under the car.

That sump plug is a long reach too from the front if you haven't got a pit to drive over. I drove the car up onto the dropped kerb outside my driveway on the drivers side, and along until that corner was raised. I then jacked up the passenger front wheel until the car was level. I approached the sump plug from the drivers side and undid it using the flat screwdriver that comes with the wheel changing kit. Was a bit surprised at the lack of sump protection - everything is plastic under there.

The oil filter housing is well marked up with the correct tightness setting (green markings on both sides of the housing to line up when tightening back up again). Examining the old filter, there was a tiny amount of metallic particulate matter trapped in the folds of the filter. Got all the old oil decanted into the containers the new oil had come in and off to the tip with it. The old oil was quite dark considering its age.

£54 oil change all in (6 x 1L Castrol Edge 5W40, oil filter and pump).

It will be as little as possible.  At that mileage it should include the oil, filter and the pollen filter. Put marks on the screws they need to undo to change the pollen filter under the bulkhead and also on the oil filter.  It should be obvious that they have changed the oil, but unfortunately not which type was used.  Check that they have done detailed things like lubricated the door hinges and locks.

Had my 2nd year service on Thursday and pleased to report that all was well. The only issue was the front tyres which were down to 3mm. Arnold Clark wanted to charge me £240 for a set of bridgestones but I politely declined. Received an email from them to say they had also performed a free complimentary health check, yeah thanks very much  .

Why I went to collect the car the girl told me that they had emailed a small video of the technician commenting on any minor points but needless to say received an email but with no attachment. Absolutely hopeless. Asked them to re-send and have received nothing.

I also asked them not to wash the vehicle which they duly did however went to collect it and it had a lovely hardened gull sh!t on the front wing.
