Oil light flashing,an odd one,i am stumped
« on: 02 July 2015, 22:42 »
Hi all.

To cut a long story short iv'e got a problem with a flashing oil light on an ADY 8 valve.Oil light flashes but goes out when revved slightly.

Here's the strange problem though. If i disconnect the wire from the oil pressure switch the oil light still does exactly the same !.

Surely with the wire disconnected it should either stay on all the time or maybe not at all but for some reason the light still flashes and the light still goes out when revved slightly.

I am slowly losing my rag with this one lol,any advice, solutions will be gratefully accepted !!!!.

Have you replaced the oil pressure switch?

Are you sure your engine only has one oil pressure switch?

On mk2 engines there tend to be two, one that is ignored below about 2000rpm (white plastic body), and one covers below that engine speed (brown or blue plastic body).

You must be disconnecting the one that only triggers the warning above 2k rpm, which isn't the one that is causing your issue.

Find the blue/brown bodied one and see if oil is oozing out of it under the wire cover, that always seems to indicate that replacement is necessary, because the internals have broken.

Thanks for your replies.

The switch was the first thing i changed for a known good one,i have also changed the oil pump, oil filter and sump gasket and filled it with correct oil.

There is only 1 oil pressure switch on an ADY but i think the switch is not the problem. The oil light will flash on low revs and go out when revved slightly with the switch disconnected so i'm guessing the problem lies elsewhere.

It won't do it until it is warmed up but the oil light flashes in an identical way whether the switch is connected or not.

Tune in next week for another episode of this thrilling, never ending saga

The thread below (admittedly about a vento, not a golf, but same engine) seems to suggest there's two, one at the oil filter housing, one on the head????

http://volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=1207201

Where's the one you're disconnecting, and what colour is the body? I'm guessing at the filter housing, and white?  Have a look around the head for another...

Hover over the picture in this ebay ad, and you'll see it, near the water flange on the nearside end of the head, with the shopping trolley just behind the spade connection: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Vento-Golf-2-0-Engine-code-ADY-/180796397972

Thankyou all.I did'nt know there was another pressure switch on the end of the head. When checked it turned out to be a cheap copy with a slight leak.Car is now on the road again
