Believe it or not I could hardly afford the hill hold option after adding Technology Pack, Xenon Lights, heated seats, privacy glass and loads more. I was like a kid in a sweetie shop. I would have opted for the Black Edition with most of those extras included and got some money back come trade in but it wasn't available on the Sportback when I ordered

So I activated Hill Hold with VCDS. I also activated it on my daughters Polo. I'm not sure if it is just certain gradients it works or if you are meant to do something beforehand but it doesn't seem to work every time. It could just be me though.  For instance if I stop on a hill and put the handbrake on then take off it generally rolls back. I've also tried pressing the brake just as I'm releasing the handbrake and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So are you expected to keep your foot on the foot brake at all times? I've not had a chance to try and work out exactly how it works probably cos I don't drive it.

The model has had a face lift since we got ours so best check it can still be done.

I've activated a few VCDS tweaks. Needle sweep, hill hold, Audi blink (drls dim on indicating), auto folding mirrors on locking, auto coming home with fogs and DRLs and a few other things I can't remember. Mine had the dipping mirror on reverse but I'm sure that can be done as well.

The factory fit hill hold (maybe a VCDS tweak that people have found is set to less and something needs to be changed to alter the interval) will keep the car held for 5 seconds after the handbrake or foot brake have been let off - it won't hold it there indefinitely like the fully electronic handbrake system of the MK7 Golf will.

For a second car, I wasn't prepared to pay out for S-line or Black edition for what amounted to mainly cosmetic items (+ Xnons on the black edition) - the Sport trim had everything functional we wanted that comes as standard on any trim (multifunction steering wheel being top priority). My redundancy will have been decimated after having bought the R outright and have gone finance with the A1 purely to get the £500 deposit contribution and pay it off a few days after collection. I wanted to have a little left of my redundancy in case I jack my new job in (it's still that bad!).

Sorry I should have mentioned about being aware of the 5 seconds but it just doesn't do it. It certainly doesn't do it just releasing the handbrake. I've also tried playing about with different pressure on the brake pedal but again I can't fathom it out.

I think you are probably right re needing some other setting changed.

I went along intent on buying the Sport rather than SlIne until the salesman showed me them side by side and the SLine won. It just looked better more aggressive / sporty in my eyes with better equipment and seats. Half leather SLine embossed, black headlining. Plus because it was dearer he could take more of a discount off and slightly better residuals it worked out not that much different in price that was until I stacked it with options

I don't think there is that much of a difference now though between the 2 from what I've read on the A1 forum although haven't seen for myself.

Aye the S-line looked a little better, but not £2k better for me (even though we would see half of it back in residuals). 17" alloys over 16" alloys - yes they look better, but the facelifted Sport's alloys look a hell of a lot better than the old ones we saw on the Sports we saw on the used forecourt - 17" wheels cost £500 more on the options list. The leather seats look a little better, but most of the leather is on the bits you're not making direct contact with the seat and everything else seemed superficial enough for me to not want to spend the extra. If the Sline had 17" wheels and Xenons then i'd have spent the money.

The Sport doesn't look hugely aggressive, so our initial thoughts of Mythos Black were soon forgotten - black suits aggressive looking cars. We liked the Floret Silver for the contrast with the grille and associated trim. I really liked the Misano red but the missus didn't and at the end of the day it is going to be her car (even if I put more miles on it than she will), so Floret it is.

Knowing I had the R for real fun also helped in the decision - I didn't need out A1 to look or be overly sporty

Hill hold will likely work in much the same way as it did on the pre-facelift MK3 Scirocco. You put your foot on the brake, let the handbrake off and the brakes will hold for 5 seconds (2 seconds on the Scirocco). You need to have pressed the footbrake while stopped for the hold to come into play.

We were at the Audi garage again last night so the missus could see a new style A1 Sport with the new wheels. Someone was revving a new RS3, it was farting and popping away as the revs died down following a press on the throttle - did sound far more of a beast than my R does.

MH, unless I've totally misunderstood what you are saying according to the configurator and brochure, the S-Line A1 does have 17" alloys and Xenons as standard ?

It has 17" alloys, but unless things have recently changed, you don't get Xenons on the S-line, it's when you go up again to the black edition.

*update* Just looked - Xenons are on the S-line now, perhaps why the S-line shot up in price after the facelift.  can't be chewed to renegotiate now!  Harder suspension on the S-line and perforated steering wheel that will pick up dead skin like nothing else are the 2 things that help me decide not to change the order!

If it was the primary car then i'd make the change to have the Xenons more than anything else. Looks like i'll be adding in some Osram Nightbreaker plus when I pick the A1 up.

It's so easy to go in expecting to buy one thing and then ramping up the trims or optins until the car is costing 30% more than expected.

You can choose what suspension you want (free) on the SLine. So its easily downgradeable . To be honest I don't find it hard at all. 1st week of ownership it felt a bit firm but doesn't feel any harder than the GTD.

The Xenons with the DRL's for me were the deal breaker. I really liked the front with the curvy DRL's but they have changed it now to along the bonnet and down. Still distinctive though. I passed an S1 today in that lovely blue colour. Plus I just think you see much better with Xenons in the dark. Halogens are like using candles now.

You are right re the leather seats only on the sides / back but come winter its not frozen and come summer you don't stick. Plus its the bolsters that would be the first to show signs of wear if it was fabric. Those crafty Audi designers thought it through

Our A1 is 3 year old in November and not a bit of dead skin or anything in the perforations of the steering wheel and I've never cleaned it. For me its much better than the GTD. The perforations give you a much better grip than the slippery GTD wheel.

The Misano Red is lovely looking especially with privacy glass and the black roof / rails. It really stands out.

Get the calculator away and spoil your Mrs   Seriously though, I'm sure she will be happy with whatever she gets especially since it will be her first car.

Had an XE S yesterday for the day and it was agreat car, certainly as good as the 3 series, nice supercharger sound and exhaust note but has made me realise how much I'm going to miss the M4 so it's put doubt in my mind now about the R!
