So, let's pretend for a second that there will be no more Golfs (of any variant) made and you had to buy new. What would your next car be?

For me it'd probably be an S4 (maybe an S3) and if I could stretch one of the new C63 AMG Mercs (estate version).

I would be looking at:

M4
RS5
TTRS
Jaguar XE S
Cayman GTS

If money was no object (and the above list applies to money being no object ), I'd add on:

R8
Jaguar F-Type

Ah, to dream!
Audi RS5 2018
Gone: BMW M4 LCI Competition Package
Previous: Mk 3 Audi TTS, Porsche 981 Cayman S, Mk 7 Golf R, Mk 7 GTI, Mk 6 GTI, Mk 5 GTI and so on....

There's a McLaren dealership a couple of hundred yards down the road from where I work and if money were no object id be straight down to take this off their hands

But back to reality. For me probably either an R, 235i or S3

Funny how only Craig's reality list so far has any cars that are even anywhere near the cost of at GTI/D/R

Me? Dunno. M135i? Maybe even a Peugeot GTI on a cheap lease. Or a Scirocco maybe.

Realistically my max budget is £35k and even that is pushing it. More likely closer to £30 especially with child on the way. Just bought one of these as a more practical car and it's actually quite nice

Popular cars; lots of space, loaded with toys and pretty affordable. My step-sis bought one last year, not that I've seen it as she lives 150 miles away.

I have a budget ceiling around your lower limit Craig, at times I've been able to afford cars that are dearer but I just do a reality check and end up with a Golf or similar each time. I just think about the depreciation of dearer cars in £££ terms and it soon brings me down to Earth!

It's not the sticker price, but the depreciation cost i'm most concerned about. I'm currently not willing to stomach more than £400 a month to cover depreciation of a discounted cash buy. A TTS would fall in that bracket, but it just looks so expensive next to an S3 or R for an extra 10ps. It does come with some extra kit over the TT Sport to justify some of the difference between it and an S3.

When you're thinking about a £25k+ car it has to be VW/Audi at 12% off or a BMW with 24% off to not lose your shirt when you chop it in after 3 years.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Supercars aside, and with Golf's off the table, realistically I'd be looking at something the better side of £40k.  But if I was to throw caution to the wind, RS3 would be very near the top of the list.  Audi TTRS - very nice but impractical for my needs.  R8 if money and practicality not a factor.  BMW M135i?  Still too ugly to make me part with my cash.
