what to do with crashed mk3
« on: 24 June 2015, 21:45 »
HI all,
im really torn with what to do with my mk3...
Doing my best impression of a distracted mother at the wheel I managed to drive my car into the back on a Clio
I am getting slated all over the show on facebook for whatever decision I seem to make and don't know whats the best thing to do.. can you guys give me some help?
So heres the circumstances... The car was up for sale for £700, its a 104'000 mile car, very well looked after, just serviced and belts just done. It has a stainless VR6 cat back exhaust.
She has been a very reliable daily for the past 6 months however my mk2 is now ready and on the road and I cant afford 2 cars so she had to go.
Now look at her

Im fully comp on my insurance.. my excess is £250 and I have to pay the remainder of the insurance policy which is £222.

So Option 1 is not to claim on the insurance and get the parts and fix it up. I reckon I could get the parts for approx £100 and could probably manage to put it back together again. It still drives. It needs a bonnet, grille, slam panel, crash bar, radiator, headlamp, bumper and engine tray.
The negatives here is that it will end up lots of different colours as cant find a dragon green car near me, I really don't have the time to do the work because I have a toddler and I work and not enough hours in the day! It will prob cost me another £50? driving about picking up parts. So say I spend £150 and have to pay back £222 to insurance. I need to get more than £372 from it to make any money back! I know people will be all funny and try and knock me down as it will need painting so not sure its worth my effort.

Option 2 is not claim in the Insurance but break it. Mk3 parts are very common and cheap and I don't know if theres any demand for it. I cant have it on my drive in bits for any longer than a week as my neighbours will complain to our landlord. Say I got £150 for the gearbox and engine, £100 for exhaust, £20 for wing (parts I think will sell quick) that's only £270. So after paying £222 to the Insurance I will be left with £48, seems a lot of effort again for £48.

Option 3 is to go through Insurance, they said they would take it away and assess it then make me an offer... what kind of market value offer am I going to get for it?? Say they offer me £500. Minus £250 excess and £222 for the policy I then get £28!

I think I need the least stressful option as I have a very busy life but then Im so stressed out that my lovely reliable mk3 is going for a measley sum of £20-£50... I just cant accept it.

What would you do?

Option 5: Take that well looked after and serviced engine and stick it in your mk2?

I don't think they would give you 500 for it either :/
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

well shes gone off to the car park in the sky :-( went straight to the scrap yard yesterday, insurance didn't even bother looking at it to assess damage!
I definitely wouldn't put the engine in the mk2.. my mk2 is a 16v and this one is an 8v... downgrade lol

Oh my bad, I mis-read. I thought it was VR6... not just a VR6 catback
