Replacement engine or a car itself?

100k always springs to mind with engines. The 1.8t is good for double that with correct servicing, care and attention in the right areas. Certain ancillaries will give up long before the lump needs attention.
If its mileage on a car itself, I'd say age is more relevant and how well its been looked after. Original panels, paint and evidence of regular care and cleaning.
Look into mot history/advisories along with checking service record.
Interior might grow tired with higher use/mileage, but very easy to check over and ascertain condition.

Hi,

I'd say miles per year is more important.

I did 25K a year in my MK5 GTI and it really felt it after three years. I replaced it with a BMW which has done 85K over 7 years and being honest it feels way better now than the GTI after 75K did. I've got a GTI on order, so no bias....

To answer your question - BMW Diesel - 20K a year, no issues, GTI petrol - I'd probably stick to 15K a year or less.

I've not had a Golf diesel so I can't comment so who knows it could be just as good as the BMW...

Cheers, Neil.

had plenty of mk4 turbos and its always been about the way car drives and general condition seen cars with no history and 175k run longer than 1s with full history and 120k most are cheap now so you wont lose much more value if you buy a cheap 1

had a focus tha i paid 500 for, no history 150k, took it to 160k spent about 100 quid on servicing/repairs. MK4 golf tdi nearly full service history 120k already spent more than i paid fixing it and ive only managed to do less than 3k miles in it :embarrassed:
