Meguiar's DA G3500
« on: 01 June 2015, 14:29 »
So I have been thinking about getting one of those DA's for the drill, as I thought to myself id give it a go if they werent too expensive. Im usually a cheapskate and try and find an 'alternative' product that is the 'same' as a big name but for something like this I think I should play it safe and get an actual Meguiars one.

Anyhow, the reason i'm posting before I buy one is I wanted to share something with you...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meguiars-G3500-System-Action-Polisher/dp/B00CNBJAZ0

Amazon, I love amazon, for all its dodgy employment practices and evil conglomerate schemes, you can always find what you want! However thankfully i'm at work, where my IT is actually run through a Ireland Server, and for some reason my first hits from Google are always .COM not .CO.UK, as a result, guess what I found:

http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-G3500-Power-System-Tool/dp/B009OBVRY4

Same product, ones £64 and the other is £26 (give or take), now of course there is handling and shipping but amazingly it only comes in at another £13, so im only paying £40 for the US version. Yes ok im waiting 9 business days instead of 3 or whatever but its not like i'm in a mega rush to sand off all my paintwork lol.

So if you're thinking about it, and wanna save a buck or two, I suggest having a gander over at the colonial websites before purchasing anything!

What plug will it have? Those additional costs look really cheap and as JV says if it's comes through at that price then happy days but these things to have a habit of catching people out mate.

By the looks of it, it's a drill attachment Neil not a standalone DA.  I suppose it depends on which drill body you attach it to, but with some I would have concerns about the ability to control the pressure being applied to the surface of the panel.  Proper DA's have an ergonomic casing, a relatively short height horizontal body, and either a D handle or side handle - all of which allow application of even pressure and much greater stability and control of the machine.  Not sure you get that with it attached to a bog standard drill.

Indeed it is just the attachment, I have a drill lying around doing not a lot so why not, if it was a full on DA then for £40 it would be very suspect, but it just so happens that US amazon have it for half price.

In depth review here http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/60691-review-meguiar-s-da-power-system.html and whilst the original does win, for the price there can be no complaints.

If by some miracle I get the knack of it I may in future buy a real one, but for now this is a perfect entry into the machine world for me

It is a very good price so can see the attraction.  Be interested to hear what it's like when you have the chance to use it
