Golf 1.6 gearbox/clutch question
« on: 30 May 2015, 12:57 »
I'm doing a clutch and gearbox replacement on a golf 1.6 2000 clutch type is a rod in the middle of the input shaft that pushes into the release bearing. However before I put it all back together I want to test things, the gearbox is fine but when I put it in gear and keep the clutch pedal pressed down the diff doesn't spin. Is that okay? I'm just thinking of being in gear in a working running car and putting clutch pedal in, it rolls. So which means the diff turns, but it doesn't do that on the diff when my clutch is pressed in. But I know the clutch just disengages the engine from the gearbox and not the actual gears. Just want clarification as I don't want to put everything together just to take it all apart again, in a tiny garage with no room to move on your back isn't quite nice lol

Thank you

don't follow what you mean? if the gearbox is fine, are you worried the clutch is fitted wrong? if the clutch is fully disengaged from the flywheel then the diff wont spin and if you put it in gear and let clutch out it will spin.

putting the clutch in will disconnect the transmission power from the crankshaft.

Your thinking of when idling in neutral with no clutch in...this is when the input shaft spins

Okay thank you, I was just thinking of when I get in a working car put the clutch pedal in and put it in gear, the car rolls. The only things I've put back on is the gear linkage and the slave cylinder and bled it up. I put the clutch and gearbox back on how it should be, just making sure that's all

if the car rolls when its in gear with clutch in then the clutch must be dragging.

I mean for example say your on a hill going up, car is in gear clutch all the way down the car will roll backwards but you can use the clutch to keep the car still and not roll down the hill. That's what I mean, I've put everything back in just the way it came out just want to know if it's all working before I put it all back in, so far just the gear linkage and slave cylinder on, so was rotating the diff to see if it moves with the gearbox in neutral and it does and to see if it moves with the gearbox in gear and clutch pedal in and it doesn't.
