Carnet
« on: 29 May 2015, 12:05 »
Hi,

Has anyone managed to find out if CarNet can be added to existing Discover pro's via a firmware update? I know it won't have the sim card in the glove box but it should work off bluetooth via the phone.

Cheers,
Golf GTD Mk7 3dr Manual, Pure White, Adaptive Chassis Control, Panoramic roof, Discover Pro Nav, Keyless entry, Dynaudio, Park assist, High beam assist, Leather pack, Service Pack.

I don't think it's possible.
However it does appear that in the new MIB 2 units, even if you didn't spec app-connect from the factory, that it can be activated by the dealers / VCDS at a later date.

Thanks for that Joe. It's a shame it can't be done as I'd really like the google maps traffic information. TMC is rubbish. It seems the new unit is a little different. Higher res screen etc.

No, you can't get Carnet in the UK on the "old" MIB1 units. (it was available in Germany - its almost certainly disabled in software)

I suppose in theory you could flash the unit... if you look carefully at the copyright information you will discover that you unit is actually a linux computer, so in theory you could attempt to hack it but of course its not going to be easy and probably you will break it and probably VW won't let you have another.

Apart from any kind of hack on the hardware/software of the unit, carnet needs a subscription which is bound to be tied to some serial number on the box...

I'm sure it would be a fun project, but I'd suggest getting a second hand unit from a scrappy to play with it...

Yeah thats all way above my capabilities! I wouldn't have a clue what to do so not going to mess round with my unit! Fitting a new MIBII unit will be expensive and not necessarily possible as it has extra stuff like the sim card reader etc which might require a new wiring loom!

CarNet is not just software. it also has a separate electronic module under the speedo-clocks cluster. Have a look at the golf mk7 forum, the US guys have disabled it and posted pictures of the module and the electronic components inside the module.

Hmmmm this one?

That looks like some kind of GSM telematics box - like ONSTAR?

Is that actually the same thing?
