Front N/S knocking
« on: 25 May 2015, 22:38 »
Hi- this is my first post on here, having just 'inherited' a 2L mk4 from my dad. Great car, great condition- only one issue-
There's a knocking from the front N/S- not on smooth roads and not over speed bumps- just when going over uneven parts of the road or small pot holes. My dad asked a mechanic to inspect the ARB when the car was MOTd in March and he found nothing amiss.
Looking on the internet, it seems people have had similar issues and tried various things, often to no avail.
Can anyone help me diagnose this? Perhaps strut-related?
Thanks
James

I would say front anti roll bar bushes! I've known loads of MOT testers that never pick up play in anti roll bars/bushes
A bit fidally to change but not hard! If your doing them yourself jack up both front wheels at same time else the anti roll bar twists and makes it a pain in the arse

Thanks for your thoughts. The thing is that the mechanic that looked over the ARB isn't just an MOT tester- he's a good mechanic that has done a lot of work on my dad's cars over the years- he does MOTs as a king of sideline. That's why it made me wonder after he said the ARB bushes were fine.

Sometimes it's hard to get the front ones to knock as there's not a lot of room to get a good grip on it! My mate had a mk4 went to multiple garages before I had time to have a look and as he described knock over sharp bumps pot holes etc I managed to get the smallest amount of play in his nsf anti roll bar bush! May pay to just change them to eliminate it!

Ok- I get what you're saying. I'd be interested in doing the ARHB bushes cos it's cheap and not a job I've done before. Any tips? I'd imagine getting the new bushes in or the old bushes out might be a pain?
Cheers.

I'd say there pretty easy but I've done loads of them and I do them on a ramp! No tools required for bushes, all I think you need is wd40, 13mm 3/8th socket and ratchet, ideally swivel head type and 17mm for wheel nuts
