New GTI, new rattle
« on: 19 April 2015, 09:39 »
Hi folks
I've had my GTI PP for 4 days and done 250 miles, its a great car...but...it has a horrific rattle behind the dashboard on the drivers side. Also, it is worse when turning the wheel left!
Any thoughts?
I have no choice but to contact my local dealer and I'm guessing it will be a dash-out investigation.
I got the car from Capitol VW in Merthyr but I presume I will be okay contacting my local dealer with the problem?
Cheers.

No idea what the rattle could be but you can take it to your local dealer for warranty work.

Knee airbag

For a year I have had a rattle that is worst on rough roads. I always thought it was coming from behind the instrument cluster or out of an AC vent but one day on a coarse country road I had it rattling and was tapping everything within reach. I applied pressure to the ride side of the knee airbag assembly by chance. Voila, the rattle stopped instantly. I'm hoping to get it switched when it goes in for service.

Try that.

There are a few different threads about dashboard rattles. I have had one since the day I picked mine up and have had numerous failed attempts at fixing it.

Mine turned out to be a rattling AC pipe hitting the bulkhead. Louder around 2500rpm

An update on this, my 2 week old GTI went in to my local dealer yesterday regarding my dash rattle.
A technician drove it with me and acknowledged the rattle from driver's side.
Dealer called me today to say they can't trace it after "having had everything apart".
Oh dear, I told them I don't want it back until it's sorted.
Really disappointed in this, it was so bad last weekend it put me off driving the car.

I've had my brand new mk7 GTi since Jan last year, only done 8k miles. Have an on-going issue with rattles, and VW taking the car back. It's going back next week to have the rear shock mounts replaced to see if that does the trick. Other than this irritating niggle, I love the car. But it does make you think twice about buying VW again.

As said all cars rattle, and all VW's rattle.  Every GTI I've ever had has had one rattle or another.   It is annoying, especially on a new car but I always just whack up the music volume to drown it out.  Thought I had a new rattle this morning but it turned out be a pair of sunglasses in the wrong place.

Hope you get it sorted

Be interested to hear your thoughts after the test drive.  Got an R on order but never got around to test driving one, bit late now

Not so much a rattle but I took the plug off the soundaktor or what ever it's called. It reminds me of a bag of spanners rattling and it was bugging me.The plug is a bit awkward to get out but the drive without it is great in my opinion.Took a bit of skin from my knuckle whilst unplugging it mind you.

I've got the car back, still with rattle. The dealer wants it in for a week in mid-May to do a full investigation. I've rung VW customer care in the meantime to make them aware. Yes, at the moment its a stereo turned up job.
