the DSG made the car feel like it had much less torque.
Genuine question - how do you 'feel' torque or experience it? My understanding is that torque is the ability of the engine to output power in lower gears (so you need to change less frequently with a manual box) - or maybe to put it another way the car is less sensitive to being in the 'correct' gear? So I guess with DSG you are insulated from its advantages somewhat?

Having owned too many to mention turbo cars and turbo Diesels, the torque feel is that wave of thrust you feel in a powerful Diesel (the older PD Diesels were the best to demonstrate this, particularly the 1.9 8v units).
Drive a remapped turbo car and you'll know exactly what I mean instantly - the tuners will get the car to boost much more strongly from initial peak turbo spool and you feel a real thrust (this is what kills clutches) from about 2000rpm on a TDI or small turbo'd GTI and a little higher on an R.
The factory map the engine so that the torque does a bit of a plateau but a tuner will generally give it a bit of a mountain so people don't sit on forums saying "yeah it might be a bit quicker but feels a bit flat still" and instead come back raving saying the car feels a million times quicker which in turn generates more remap sales... it's the feel of the car more than the actuality of the power on hand.
On a Diesel you will notice the torque thrust either on a trailing throttle application or a progressive acceleration - these types of acceleration suit turbo Diesels best as they're slower revving than petrols so you need to ride the torque to get the best out of the thrust, and obviously a turbo is a wheel that needs to increase in speed to provide more boost so snapping the pedal down won't provide the best acceleration, rather more you need to quickly but smoothly push the accelerator pedal.

A mk7 GTI has Diesel like torque (same output in lb ft or NM as the revered old 170 BHP PD unit Diesels) and is fairly low revving so rather than snapping the throttle open it works really well in the mid range if you drive it a bit like a Diesel if you're not going flat out and therefore it allows you to ride the torque plateau to reasonably high revs making the car feel almost like a remapped mk5 GTI.
If you drive it like that with a DSG in anything other than paddle mode it will just change gear non stop making the engine feel flat and laggy, and it's not just VW's that suffer this.

Little Update,

Picked up a silver DSG GTI courtesy car (looks no where near as good as CSG) on friday morning, had no word from the dealer and go back to uni tomorrow.

I never thought id have a strong feeling with the DSG, i just feel like it makes the car feel slow?? mine felt so punchy and with the dsg whether its a smooth drive or what it just doesn't feel as powerful, weird feeling actually!!

Anyway I'm taking my replacement to uni for this week and ill be back friday, hoping that they have it found and fixed by then.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't like the reflex silver. I've ordered a reflex silver!!!!

Once you get a lair of dust on a Pure White it loses that bright white lustre and when you get a lair of dust on Reflex Silver you just don't notice it. Unless you wash your car three times a week Reflex will be the long term winner!!!
As much as I love the Pure White on my GTI (it doesn't show up the dirt *that* bad) if I was ordering again I'd be tempted with silver...    just saying

Wait til you get your black car back after the Sahara dust storm...

Limestone Grey is the sensible colour for anyone who hates washing their car (like me!)
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Tungsten Silver is also another good colour to hide the daily grime.

Still, I'm sure the OP will have a long and happy relationship with his Carbon Grey which is a pretty awesome colour when it's clean.

I guess tmcolour really is a personal thing. The day I ordered I saw a carbon grey and a silver side by side. I picked the silver. I also saw a tungsten silver GTI a few days later. Nice colour too. Hopefully the reflex silver I ordered will look the part...

Not normally a fan of silver cars or light greys, but imo both Reflex and Tungsten Silver really suit the Mk7 more so than any other mark of GTI except maybe Mk4.  They bring out the sharp creases of the design so well, and the upside is they look cleaner for longer

I don't mind cleaning my car every day of the week so have picked DBP for the R

Final update.

Car is fixed there was a loose bolt that was the cause!! Anyway the buggers rang me just as I arrived at uni in Nottingham where I was planning on staying till Friday. They need the car back as it's the dealer principals! Wonder what he has been driving.

Anyway going home tomorrow night and will probably use it as an excuse to stay home for a further week!
