Mk6 on the Nordschleife
« on: 25 March 2015, 20:21 »
Anyone track their mk6?

I'm a bit of a Nordscleife junky, but in another car more suited to the task.

However, there are a couple of trips this year where I would fancy taking the golf around and I'm interested to know what the weak spots are of a mk6 when it gets on a circuit. The ring isn't a "normal" circuit and can be relatively easy on brakes for example but I'm assuming any sustained fast lapping will show up tyres, suspension, brakes as less than adequate?

Is there a basic formula to get a car suitable? I'm thinking some 888's or cups, decent pads and then if feeling flush you could add a simple improved suspension like the b12 kit (I can't be too fussed with adjustable ride heights unless there's a real benefit) and maybe updated sway bars?
Car is quick enough really (ed35 stage 1) it's more about turning, stopping and not being plagued by boiled brakes and understeer!

Anyone done it or am I in the wrong forum?

Thanks

Hi, I went late October last year but couldn't get in due to Fog.

I'm booked to go at the end of April pre May Bank Holliday, I've got the factory adjustable suspension which is plenty hard enough on Sport setting, I'm planning on having EBC Yellowstuff Pads before I go also I'm already running Eagle F1 tyres which are plenty. If I do start to go more regularly I would consider a 2nd set of rims with a decent hard set of slicks to get some life.

Hi Dan,

Been quite a few times to the Ring - love it. Setting off in the morning for another trip in my Golf R as it happens. Full VLN circuit trackday alongside a trackday at Spa the day before.

I took my old Edition 30 around there a few times too.

Brakes cook well when braking from over 150mph down to 50mph, so ensure decent brake upgrades for the best performance - Project Mu or Pagid blues are the ones I'd go for.
I took R888's with me last time. They are good and grip like a biatch in the dry although they can go off quickly - The new R888R's are out soon (late April) and I will be trying these as they are very much the next generation of trackday tyre.
Monotube Bilsteins are a great option - I have had Bilstein B16 PSS10's on my last 3 cars - they take a lot of hammer and just soak it up. They last well and don't go "soft" on track. Invest in a set and you will still get more than half your money back when it comes time to sell up.
Anti-roll bars are a must - H&R or Eibach as long as they are adjustable.

Anyway I have to go pack my wellies in a bit - forecast Snow whilst I'm over there, so I've gone for R1R's this time.

DN11 i assume? I have done all the DN days bar DN6 ....as i said i have a P car for that but the insurance is getting out of hand. The forecast was appaling for last week so i did take the golf, it was on winter tyres which for the roads around there this week was a good shout, even for the circuit they looked like the right choice....i didnt see you but i wasnt looking, my pal was in his white R too and another in a G60 mk2, maybe you saw that but we spent most of the time in the garage, was a dissappointing trip but i have had so many great ones and you have to take the rough with the smooth as they say! Will be there again for DN12 & 13.

I did a couple of laps but frankly, the car in stock form, in those conditions,  is pretty hopless but hey we knew that!

Thanks for the info, do you just upgrade the pads on yours or discs too? race fluid?

If you are doing the other events let me know and make sure to say hi.
