Mk2 GTi 8v (1990) Air box
« on: 25 March 2015, 16:02 »
Good afternoon all. I have finally stopped looking and actually taken the plunge by buying a Mk2 GTi, so am totally new to these models. Unfortunately the one I've bought has had some mods, which I'm planning to putting back to original spec, starting with the air filter.

The entire box has been replaced by a chrome domed affair so I'm looking for an original to replace it with. This is actually proving harder than I thought so I was wondering whether there are any options here. As per the title it is a 1990 8v so I assume it is the digifant injection system? Is my only option another 8v digifant set up or would a 16v one work?

The idle is all over the place, and since the airbox also contains the airflow meter I did wonder if that could be a factor?

Many thanks for any advice and you time, I hadn't planned on buying a project but maybe this is where I'm going now.............oops.

Actually, I've just realised the airflow meter is in place, it is just the entire box itself I'm missing. I have done some googling for specialist breakers but if anyone has any recommendations for Mk2 people I'd like to hear. Thanks again.

Hi and welcome along.  I've just noticed your post.  From what you describe, it sounds as though the airbox and filter has been replaced with an induction kit, great if you want that induction noise but it can suck in hot air from around the engine bay.

If you need an Airbox complete with airflow meter and I might even have the relevant air channelling that fits over the back of the headlight, I have one I can part with for a few £'s.

You should more than likely have digifant fuel induction, 16v won't work with it, completely different.  There is an 8V tuning guide here somewhere.  Go through it and if the vacuum hoses look tired just replace them.
