Rust problema
« on: 22 March 2015, 11:50 »
Having just bought a 56 plate with very low mileage I have read of several instances of rusting to wings and sills. Posts tell me this a known Vw problem(caused by foam stripping?). Tha car has a full Vw history at Breeze in Poole Dorset. I intend to continue with my local Southampton dealership(Peter Cooper,Southampton). My question is would it be best to get an inspection now and possibly ask for the causes of the rust to be removed before it happens? Anyone done this? Or is the problem not as common as it appears? Thanks

get the dealer to inspect the car it makes any future claim a bit easier  :smiley: but the problem is well known just vw wont admit it that much  :whistle:

 :smiley:cheers.lots of people saying Vw dealt with no problem,others not so good.Prevention better than cure? Apparently some foam sound insulation.and bolts at root of problem!

i noticed some rust coming through on the front wing of mine last year and heard through this forum that it was a known fault so i took it to the local vw dealership to investigate. they hesitated to respray at first, but then i mentioned the 12 year anti rust policy and sure enough within 5 days it was returned as good as new... even got a hire car out of it. great service considering i didn't buy it through vw.

Hi again,Interested in your reply. Have read this problem affects diesels only. Doubt that's true from reading posts. Have looked at the vw PDF file for repairing.

Get a cup of tea/beer and read through this;

In short, it's not a recall but a good will gesture on VW's part. Ask nicely enough and you may get new wings painted and fitted for free. :smiley:

Thanks for replies.my car only done 13k on a 56 plate, no rust showing yet!!! Thinking of taking it to VW and asking them if they cann do preventative work on their bodywork guarantee. 12 years I believe.

Doubt they will to be honest. My girlfriend found a load of rust under the rear light which is not an area exposed to "wear and tear" yet VW only gave a 50% contribution to labour as it "a defect in the paint surface not covered by warranty". Still working that out to be honest...

bloody hell, 13k for a 9 year old car... that's unreal! good job picking it up mate, must be in good condition. would be very surprised if they would do anything to prevent rust, i think the 12 year warranty would only apply to cars under that age that have rust showing in the known problem areas, which is under the front wheel arch on mk5s... not just diesels by the way
